The Helinox table is a great bit of kit, light, well made and reasonably robust. What though has always troubled me about it is potentially melting the surface when using a gas or fuel stove, so I’ve never done it.

As I hate grovelling around on the ground (and let’s face it few of us are spring chickens) I have been looking around for a well made, light, collapsible table to go on top of the Helinox, making it safe from radiated heat. I think I have found one.

The Alpkit ‘Splitta’ table

Not cheap but well made and does the job, though Claus goes a bit far in his positive review:

....use it every time I am cocking

Stay in a hotel, yer fuckin pikey :D

I do but I have been rummaging around in the loft and I fancy a bit of camping.

I use a Vango wind shield laid flat on my helinox table. This gives two layers of aluminium between stove and table. Use a Primus Primetech gas stove and a Primus Omnitech multi-fuel stove on longer trips. 240g and folds flat into it’s own bag. Cost about £10. Never had any problems.

I also use some cheap, ebay stove windsheilds as a solid/heatproof top to my fabric table. Works well.

Does anyone have any experience of using the Andes Portable Folding Table. Looks very similar to the Trekology, other than the colour, and is almost half the price(£19.99 compared to £34.99).

I have one of those; but i would'nt dream of trying to cook on it. You can get folding metal tops on the same base; now one of those i would cook on.

I hear ya, but i did say a few posts up that I used a couple of those aluminium wind breaks as a more solid (and less burny) table top - dual purpose, innit?

The metal ones you mention look a bit bulkier as well, but no more expensive.
