Pump had been rebuilt by a previous owner.
Shaft had a bolt in the end and the pressed steel impeller.

I'd bought a new seals assuming that the later impeller would already have the correct spacer.

The spacer on the bike had an extra flat spacer (with a rubber insert) between it and the seal. (Between the usual spacer and the water seal)

Installed the shaft (which was fine after a quick wet & dry) by initially drawing the drive gear flush with the casing.
This left a few mm of movement taken up by the water seal spring.
Fitting the old spacer without the mysterious washer meant that the shaft was drawn further into the seal and left the drive gear a mm or so below the casing face.
Also uncomfortably stiff to turn.
I can tap the end of the shaft to slacken things to what I'd be happy with.

So I'm thinking I need a slightly different spacer to go with the new water seal and that the mysterious washer was part of a previous version of the 'new' type water seal.
Unfortunately the previous seal was pretty mangled by the time I got it out.

I'll ring Motorworks tomorrow about a new spacer but I wondered if anyone here can shed some light on it.
