I’ve recently started feeling a bit of play in the handlebars, a slight “rocking”. Would that mean the head bearing is on its way out, or will some adjustment do for a while? Bikes done 38,000 miles, if it needs done is it a pain, or reasonably straight forward? TIA, cheers.

Could be headstock bearings, but what about the ball joint? Check the rubber boot for splits - it could have been spilt for ages, now bone dry and worn. And have you carefully checked all the other bolts (wheel, lower yoke, top yoke, fork stantions at top fixing point?

Try to tighten the steering head bearing bolt first.
