Morning gents,

Just wondering if anyone knows of any BMW Motorrad specialists vaguely near Aberdeen?

Took the bike (R1250GSA) in because it has died on a few occasions on cold start, is really lumpy on ravers cold start, backfires at 4k sometimes resulting in a noticeable lurch, quick shifter is pretty shocking and sometimes the blipper doesn’t work at all.

Obviously they came back saying there’s nothing wrong with the bike despite multiple people here having similar symptoms that were cured with the cam timing being adjusted, which is what I asked them to bear in mind.

Not impressed so I’m hoping I could get a second opinion from someone that knows what they’re talking about...

Thanks in advance guys,

Dan

I’ve got the cam alignment tools and I’m near Inverurie. Hardly a specialist though.

As long as you’re confident and have done it before I’m happy to swing by some time you’re free and can pay in cash or beer?

Might just check one side and see if it’s out and go from there...

Is the bike still in warranty? Even if it's not, I would suggest you contact BMW UK.

Yes it is, only had it since March.

I’m a bit reluctant to because the usual response will just be that the dealer checked it over and found no issues so why would they then do anything...

They did say they reset all the adaptations so I don’t know if that’ll make a bit of a difference since things like the cold start seem to have developed rather than be there from new.

If under warranty make them log everything, and make them fix it, be hard nosed, make a complaint to BMW UK head office, that will wake the feckers up.

Good shout, I’ll send an email once I’ve picked the bike up I think...

Better still get in contact with motorrad central in Dalkeith. I bought mine from Dundee but I’m just so impressed with the attitude of the guys down there.

I’ve done my own 2016 lc and it's improved but I didn’t have your issues. If it’s under warranty then I suggest you propose to reject the bike to apply leverage to the dealer.

Thanks guys, I’ll just keep at them then I guess. It’s not unrideable but I feel like it should work better than it currently is. Maybe I’m just being picky?

It’s just shy of 2k miles now, so not very much really. When is the dreaded shiftcam failure mileage? Haha.

You can never be picky enough with a new bike costing 20 grand, ask them to let you try another bike like yours to compare, then you will have a sure answer if you are being picky, or they are using their usual bull, they are all like that............:rob

True, it’s not a cheap bike and I’d expect BMW to have things working better than that.

The salesman is pretty good so might ask him if he’ll let me take a GSA out when I go to collect mine.

The backfire and lurch may be down to you not being firm enough with the quick shifter

The gear change is pretty stiff with GSAP fitted and a couple of times I’ve managed to touch the gear lever enough to cut the motor but without actually changing gear, resulting in a violent lurch forward

I find it works best with touring boots on so you are less delicate when changing

The backfire/lurch happen consistently at 4k rpm under light to medium load without being anywhere near the shifter so I really think it’s something motor related rather than that.

I notice the shifter is pretty solid, which I don’t really mind, I just wish that it worked better. I don’t like the fact it’s unusable between 1-2 and 2-3 without bucking really badly. And the downshift feels like there’s two distinct clicks when pressing down, if it works at all. Sometimes it refuses to and I have to shift down one with the clutch before it starts working again...

Indeed, sounds like you’ve got a different problem if it happens when you’re not changing gear

Mine’s a 2016 bike before the gearbox upgrade and it’s pretty good, even 1-2 and 2-1

To be fair, I have bought my recent new bikes from Dalkeith :beerjug:

Sometimes the down shift isn’t too bad, but the upshift is always crappy. Watch some of the 44teeth/Baron vin Grumble videos and he always goes on about how good the shifting is so just makes me think more and more that there’s something not right.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Do you have a mate with a GS with quick shifter who could try your bike ? Or you try his

Someone who’s used to the same bike, even a 1200, should be able to feel if there’s something wrong
