If the weather was a bit more predictable, I'd do Scotland more regularly, as the scenery and roads look stunning. But riding through the arse end of England to be greeted by shite weather doesn't appeal.

I / we have to suffer a long day's ride through all your English motorway "Smart" roadworks to get to mainland Europe.
Trust me, I hate it!!!!
Eurotunnel and into France - bliss.

And a few more...

I think for Scotland you have to be prepared for the worst and hope for the best... We've been extremely lucky over the past week and will definitely be coming back. For me, the riding, scenery, people food almost everything has surpassed anything i've experienced in France or anywhere else in Europe...

I am very biased and I admit it but for me, Scotland beats anywhere I've been, granted not a world traveller but Picos/Pyrenees/Alps I've done a number of times and there is no where like home IMO. Yes we don't always get good/great weather but everyone knows that before they go so it's not a surprise if it's crap.

brilliant write and fantastic route you took, not being suckered in by the NC500 and finding there is so much more, haste ye back !

I love Scotland on the bike and do come regularly despite the weather being, lets be kind , hit and miss.

I often wished i lived up in the Highlands and could then pick days out on the bike when the weather is good but when you book a week you have to take what comes

South to North, or North to South, most of the UK is shite.

Thanks for the great photos and ride report, it's much appreciated.
You did have great weather, on the whole, which doesn't happen very often and it is stunningly beautiful when it's not pissing rain!

I recall seeing you up by Weem/Aberfeldy way. Interestingly, I sold my trials bike to a guy from Ullapool and I said to him, I'd love to live up there for the roads, his reply, nah....their not that great, I just left it there.

What a daft blinkered view....loads of great roads and places to visit up and down the whole UK, you just have to seek them out...and be handy with a map or satnav...

Right, thanks for all of your comments guys but the ride isn't quite over just yet...

Yesterday saw us ride from Edinburgh out to see the Falkirk Kelpies, some 32 mile detour (round trip) but well worth it.. Spectacular sculptures rising some 100ft up.If you get the chance they are worth a visit. Get there early to avoid crowds etc..

From there we took a nice route heading south to our final nights accommodation in Scotland. The Gordon Arms in the Yarrow Valley sits in the middle of nowhere but the rooms are comfortable, food is tasty and the beer is welcoming. Again the cost of a nights stay is 40.00 pppn...

As mentioned previously today is our last day in Scotland, we head south for Harrowgate today where we'll be staying at the Boar's Head tonight. Tomorrow we'll be stopping in Doncaster around lunchtime to visit some family before the final ride back to Windsor. Aiming to be home around 1800ish...I'll not be riding any motorways down to Harrowgate and Donnie, we'll continue riding through towns and villages, stopping for coffee as we go.

I'll update on the final accommodation at The Boar's Head tonight and post some websites and links that have all helped to us on this trip. :thumb2

I’ve been up to Scotland twice in the last 6 months, once in November for a week and again this March for 10 days ( including Orkney) and only had one day of drizzle. There were a couple of rainy nights but all stopped by the morning. I love it up there and will be back up this September for 14 days with my mountain bike. More remote the better. :thumb2
It doesn’t always rain up there despite what you hear. Stunning scenery and deserted beaches. Perfect.
You had great weather and found some superb roads too. :thumb2

So as mentioned previously i thought i'd post details of al the accommodation used on our trip. All were great and on average charged around the same amount £80 per night for the 2 of us. No issues with parking the bike at any of the hotels. All were very accommodating and worth a visit, however i'd think twice of staying at the Watermill again, or if i did i'd head out for dinner somewhere or take my own food.. Out of all the accommodation the Buccleuch Arms in Moffat and Torguish House at Inverness are really aimed at the biking community. Both were great places to stay with loads of advice on local roads to ride and routes to take.
Out of all of the accommodation my personal favourite was the Gordon Arms in the Yarrow Valley. Lovely people, great food and very comfortable rooms.

The book i'd recommend is the Motorcyclists Guide to Scotland by J G Fergusson..The route we took can be found at the back of the book titled "The Tour"... Great route to really explore and experience Scotland at it's best with options to ride the NC 500 if that's your thing (although a load of people we spoke to advised against riding it advising there were plenty of other roads that were much better)....Each to their own..
