Hello lovely people, I’ve read for a while to see if anyone else had similar issues, I’ve serviced my 98 1100gs, including the valve adjustment having watched Chris Harris on you tube over and over till I was confident, I’ve done the valves three times in the last week but so, but I’m now having issues with the engine “bogging down” occasionally up to 45/50 but very much between 50 & 70 mph. I’m thinking my issue was there before I adjusted and my adjustment has magnified the issue. I’ve also checked the TBs are balanced and did that using a very Gucci bit of kit loaned from a mechanic friend, he’s under the impression it’s a fuelling issue, as we know the filter is inside the tank, so I’m asking if anyone had suffered similar issues

When was the fuel filter last replaced?
The symptoms sound like fuel starvation.
Personally, that’d be my next job.

Report back after, I’m interested how you get on.

I got the bike from a mate, he had it serviced at BMW several years ago, it sat for a couple a years before I got it, I drained it thoroughly then put good fuel in it before turning it over however I remember the fill neck had corrosion on it so I’ll try changing the fuel filter in case it’s partially blocked, thank you for the response

Also check your filler cap drain hole it may be blockled and letting water into the tank

Also the Throttle position sensor May need checked and or set

Possibility of water in the cable loom shorting terminals and screwing up fuelling

Had that in a K 1 in for similar problems many years back NOT an easy find !

All stuff that has come up in local conversation but the water getting in may well be a good point as I’ve been building and left the bike out in the weather for weeks, thanks mate

Off topic I know, but nice paint job

Thanks, it’s a wrap, several vinyls, I had some left over from a job. Seats are my design too. I keep my trumpet under the pillion seat

Is it a plastic tank; and was it bubbling Van; i have a plastic tank on my 1100 and it's quite badly bubbled; i've thought about giving it a wrap; but i wondered if the bubbles would still show through; or if they stripped the tank back before wrapping.:beerjug:

Alright Snelly

Wrapping is the same as painting, you must have a good flat clean non porous surface to start with. I’m no expert with the plastic tanks, only ever come across them on my Mille, but I think if you knocked the high spots back with a series of grit papers, sealed it with a primer then a petrol safe lacquer before wrapping. I plumbed for a Germanic urban cammo as it was so hard wrapping that huge tank in one piece, it can be done though. Going to wrap the beak with some canary yellow too.

Struggling to give bike the time it deserves this week as I’m building a new workshop, but....... I ran some silkolene pro fst and a tank of higher grade fuel through it, seams to have improved, I’m therefore thinking that it’s definitely fuel related, if not cured then I’ll pull the tank off when it’s empty again, definitely change the fuel filter and check that nothings got into the fuel lines. Bloke in the states found a bad Batch of filters had unwound spreading material down pipes as far as the injectors.
If this had been one of previous 17 sports bikes I would have sold up. Why I love this 20 year old tatty lump so much is beyond me

The best way to check your fuel system quickly is to measure the return flow at idle, from the injectors back to the tank. If it’s 2 liters per minute, all is good and you don’t have to dig into the tank. Here’s how: https://advrider.com/f/threads/r1150-fuel-system-diagnostic-tool.897983/

One of the real possibilities is that your U-shaped hose has a partial leak. The above test will check that.

My 1150 had just this fault but it was much more pronounced and would barely run. Having said that clearly the degree of any split will have a marked effect on how it runs. The pipe is a specialist piece as it always submerged in fuel so if you do replace it ensure its made of suitable construction.

I think I’m going to have to read that a couple of times to get my head around it, great stuff though and thanks for the link. What are QD? Quick Connectors?

Check the resistance across the two electrical connectors on the injectors... should be around 16ish, any different is suspect.

Thanks mate, I’m banking all this fantastic advice as I’ve been building all week, took the week off to put my footings in for my upholstery workshop. He bikes been out right back at the bottom of my love list
