Given new C&S's would a quick yet effective way (sans special tool) to align the chain be to centre the rear sprocket left to right, by eye, within the rollers of the chain i.e. the gap between the left hand plate and left hand side of the tooth should be the same as the gap between the right hand plate and the right hand side of the tooth?

That should be plenty accurate enough shouldn't it?

That's how I align the wheel and chain on my trials bike.

I'll lend you a laser if you want? Drop me a pm I'm likely to be over at the weekend :beerjug:

The chain on my 1190 always runs off centre on the rear sprocket. Laser says it’s dead straight.

"C & S's"?
On my H-D I use a long length of screwed rod with two nuts together at one end and measure from the centre of the swinging arm to the centre of the rear wheel axle.

............

Chain & Sprockets Khulu :)

So, this is as good as I got it by eye.
Having checked with a laser (thanks bisbee :beerjug:) it is, a la Cookie, absolutely cock on :)

K'in miles out :D

Bog off :p

You know what really stressed me out and that was doing the rivet link. It's the first time I've done one on a 'big' 150bhp bike and getting the plate on just right (not too tight) and pins just flared just enough was (for me) a painstaking process. Still, my left leg is still intact so I think I got it right :thumb

Well if you have around 0.5mm flare on each rivet you won't be far out..... although 150bhp should soon sort it if it's tight ;)

I did 'em by eye, just like my chain alignment. What could possibly go wrong :D

Andres

PS Not really, 0.5mm, exactly what I measured..........
