Hello,
Thought I'd come and say hello. I actually ordered the new S1000RR for mostly track work and possibly to race it later but due to production problems causing delays Bahnstormers BMW have offered a complementary bike in the meantime. Nothing racey appealed so I decided to take the opportunity to see what the GS was all about as it's not something I would have done otherwise and its supposed to be the ultimate of the genre.

I had a KTM 1290 Adventure a few years ago in the search for a 'do it all' commuter / off road / A road scratcher but realised that a 'do it all' bike simply doesn't exist. It was too massive to go off road effectively and fitting off road tyres ruined it on road. It was a great fast A road scratcher on the road tyres but rubbish on the motorway at any higher speeds so I gave up on the off road thing and traded it in for an S1000RR. I didn't need a commuter in the end and only used if for a bunch of Nurburgring trips and the odd trackday where the noise limits gave me problems with my Ducati. This year I converted it to a full race bike for Sprint and Endurance races.

When BMW offered the choice I initially looked at the XR as I thought I could comfortably get down to the Alps at RR speeds and then smash it around the twisty mountain roads, or even take it to the Nurburgring or a relaxed trackday in Europe and do some laps. Unfortunately the demo bikes had really bad vibrations that put my hands to sleep and when I ran at different revs to stop that it put my feet to sleep! I can deal with that on a race bike but I knew I wouldn't use the bike for long trips so it was off the list.

So I'm coming at this from a different angle to when I had the KTM. I'm putting my hooligan ways to the side and going to try and appreciate the GS as the country shrinker I know it does extremely well but is hard to appreciate from an hour demo ride. It's no where near as capable as the XR in terms of speed, cornering and braking but I can see straight away that it still goes very very well for a starship and I reckon it will be a big improvement on the KTM for covering distance fast so I'm hoping I can jump on and take it to the Alps and enjoy the scenery a bit more but still have fun on the twisties :)

I'd post some pictures but it doesn't seem to be possible?

Just been to the black forest and the vosges mountains with my mate on his R1 (admittedly an old one) and the GS was perfect. Carried all our stuff and scratched like a good 'un.

Nice one, the Black Forest is an amazing road. It's always one of my way points when going through Europe :)

Probably cannot post photos unless you pay to join, maybe.

Welcome

Cheers for the welcome. The bike has arrived at the dealers so hopefully I'll manage to pick it up on Monday :)

Welcome!

You have to host pictures externally and then reference them in your post using the <img> (using square brackets) tags.

You will. And you'll be able to look (a tiny bit) at the scenery at the same time. :D

Welcome mate - you may find you like it (a lot) despite yourself.

I tried a GS years ago and thought it boring.
I had a K1200S at the time and when it went for service (funnily enough at Barnhstormers) I asked for anything except a GS as the loan bike.

But the K12 had to stay in and the only bike I could have overnight was a GS, which I ended up thrashing across the back roads as I was late for a meeting.
That ride massively opened my eyes to the potential of a bike I had thought boring before, and I bought one.

Fast forward a good few years and a multistrada and KTM 1200 SA-S, and I'm back on a 1250 GS which is bloody good and has provided me with 2.5K highly amusing miles in the Dolomites. The 1250 is, IMHO, better than the XR; just as quick in the real world and without the vibes and banzai personality...

I've had 4, I know what they are like to ride ;)

Only the two for me (both 4XV's). Still got half a bikes worth of R1 spares in the garage. That blue 5JJ does look nice.

My previous sporting injuries to my back and neck prevent me from having another sports bike.:tears

My first litre bike five years ago was an (2004?) R1 5PW a few months after getting my bike licence :) They are unflappable whilst cranked over, a lot of fun.

I still have a set of front forks and yokes for a 5PW in the loft, many have now been front-ended and due to a fairly short production run before the 5VY (my favourite R1) came out, they are worth a few quid.

Picked the bike up last night and I'm very happy I chose it over the XR. It's no race bike but there's something really enjoyable about it and still potential for sillyness. I think the only negative I could mention in relation to touring would be that it's not all that great for wind protection on the motorway at high speeds, which was the reason I traded in my KTM 1290Adv a few years back for the RR. I guess this would be RT terroritory? All in all I'm looking forward to getting in the miles :)

Haha yes I'm definitly going to at least do the Nurburgring on it for giggles. There were loads of GS on the Nordschleife last week having fun, probably passing through on the way to the races at Assen.

I've done, on an older 2007 GSA, Cadwell Park under pouring rain, and it was fun (no way I was using my other bike in that weather :D)
But also Brands Indy (evening sessions) was a good laugh.
