... on a fairly recent and up-to-date iMac that brings all my search results up as American :blast

I've selected Google in 'Preferences' as the desired Search engine, however all my results are from Yahoo with an American bias. This has only recently started so I'll confess it's probably user-error but what have I clicked to make it happen ?

Are you using Safari, Chrome, Firefox?
Have installed any browser plugins recently?

So, you've clicked on Safari (top l/h corner), then Preferences, then the 'Search' tab and set it to Google...... is that right?

Ok.

Menu Safari > Preferences, then select the "Extension" pane. What do you see?

Should be like this, minus the "Open In" extension:
safari_extension.png

in your search bar, type google uk, once you are in google uk webpage, click on the little gear cog top right hand side and then, click set to current page, like in picture below.

In order:

Andres - Search tab set to Google; results come up as Yahoo US
Minio - I get a completely blank Extensions page
Smogbob - Search on Google UK brings up a Yahoo.com search with Google UK as the first hit !

Ok so click on the google uk link and then when goole uk comes up, hit the cog wheel on the right, and proceed to click on set current page.

I'll be back, just walking the dogs ...

Somewhere somehow i reckon you have downloaded something with the Yahoo search extension attached which sets default search engine to Yahoo

As Smog says get to google UK and then set that as default search engine

^^^^^This^^^^^^ I've got it on Chrome and have to reset it every couple of months, right ball ache it is.

Safari>Preferences>General gives me this, so I've clicked it but it still comes up as a Yahoo search :rob

No.
According to the settings shown in his screenshot, searching via the address bar should give him Google result.

I bet something similar to a toolbar has been installed, probably without him realising, in the browser. But he should see something within the extension panel.

Seem to be a relatively common issue and always related to plugins, etc.
