Can you take a screenshot of your system preferences?
Just the mail panel with all the icons.

I think ...

... this is what you mean ?

Can you open your application folder and see if you have an application called yahoo search in there, if so drag it to trash.

No icon for Yahoo Search in Applications folder !

As per post #18, changed homepage to Google, but search still comes up as Yahoo

It is not a preference setting.
Smogbob, might make sense to completely reset Safari's preferences.

Sorry, wrong username :)
I meant oblertone.

Oblertone, if you don't mind losing all your Safari preferences:

open the Terminal application, put in these commands. The computer should ask for your password to confirm.

rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/Apple\ -\ Safari\ -\ Safari\ Extensions\ Gallery; \

rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist; \

rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist; \

rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist; \

that is the only solution left

Nope, it might be a (malicious-ish) redirect.

yes but open preferences again, and click on search, the one next to password, and see if it shows Yahoo, if so change to Google.

Been there, done that :blast

Minio, you lost me at 'Terminal Application' !

Chaps, thank you for all the suggestions but I think it'll be easier to disconnect this stylish pile of poo and take it to Apple for sorting !

Minio, you lost me at 'Terminal Application' !

hahahahah – I feared that! :D

99% you have a (malware) redirect. Resetting Safari to its "out of the box" state should solve the problem.

Now waiting for Apple on-line support to talk to me !

Been there, done that :blast

Well just done a test with the wifes mac, and if I change to google, google search is showed, and same with bing, and duck n go so now I have no idea why yours is doing that unless you have some malware that will not let the settings activate away from yahoo...........:blast

'Twas indeed Malware, now cleared after two hours 'chatting' with three different advisers; and two different scans with Malwarebytes !

ps - As a side effect it has also cured a problem with my email on this Mac !
