Got some amazing advice for my France trip this year from yourselves off this site. Made the the trip one I won't forget anytime soon.

So Im back for more advice for a 2020 trip to Nordkapp. Im allowing 21 days total from my home in Dublin, Im just hoping that's enough as Im thinking Ill get the ferry to France first and head from there. 6-8 hours driving a day, camping where possible.

Any tips or thoughts of where to see?

Thanks

Have a good read through the various threads in the Scandinavia section. Lots of good advice there. Personally, I'd head north through Norway, taking my time and avoiding the E6. Then come back via Sweden. That way you can get a wriggle on if you need to on the way home. There's less risk of getting hammered by Norwegian traffic laws.

That's a great route. I came back from Bergen last year on Fjord lines which allowed a bit more time bimbling around the fjords. I found if I booked on the Norwegian website rather than British I saved £50 which went on the commanders buffet with another discount which was an hour and half of top quality scoffing and free wine and beer. The only other tight arse tip is if you you do the Lysebotn ferry the local one is a lot cheaper than the tourist but only runs twice a day.

Just one thought. Might it be possible to freight your bike from Ireland to Norway / back again and for you to fly out / back?

Some great reading there thank you plus I’ve sent off for some quotes on shipping the bike. Could be the right job !!!

Overlanders are charging €750 return, to ship your bike to Oslo airport (Gardermoen), a return flight from Dublin is around £150 with Norwegian air, then you have 15 days to explore :thumb2

That's what I'm doing this August, better than 6 ferries there and back plus a lot of motorway miles :thumb

Phil.

Priced up shipping the bike (not with Overanders) and its 950 euro is ill chat with overlanders directly. This is the way forward I think!

It looks like a lot until you discount it for the time saved, running expenses (ferries, fuel, board and lodging). I’d definitely give it careful consideration. And anyway, it’s only about the price of a pint of lager in Bergen.

So with Overlanders (inc shipping insurance) and my own flight ill be sorted for 1300 euro, for me its more about saving the time. And as Wapping said its only the price of a pint:beer:

See knew you lads would help !!!

Oooops, nearly forgot.

The OP is now settled on how to get from home to Norway and back but let’s not forget:

To save time, I’d get a copy of this:

Or this:

Then map some of the points out against your suggested route in your opening post and work out how best to slot some of the ideas in against your time available. Job done.

Or you could just “Ride yer bike mate, don’t plan nuffin”. Advice which (if followed) would have seen you not shipping your bike from Ireland to Norway and back again.

Norway

Hi Antony, I just got back from trip to the Arctic circle last night. in a Motorhome not on the bike.
Just a few points
1, Travel one way via Sweden. Less tolls faster and better roads.
2. Norway is stunning but progress can be slow, Low speed limits and small roads. (4hrs to do 50km one morning) it can take longer than expected.
3. Can be expensive to eat out plus hotels. If your trying to do it on a budget be careful and Plan.
4. Take the correct gear it can be shit weather.
5. Lots of camping spots all the way up.
6. Pick your time of year for best possible weather. Last week the weather the weather at the arctic circle was terrible freezing rain high winds.
7. But a cracking place to go to!!!!!!

If you want any more info send me a PM and i'll send you my Phone no for a chat.

Cheers

....-and this map might be useful. https://www.vegvesen.no/trafikkbeta?lat=63.09360&long=13.91325&zoom=4&listView=false
Zoom in closely.

Note some roads are closed in winter.

Yellow roads are often slower, but nicer and more fun.

The red roads in Sweden is the fastest, and the most boooooring roads!

As I said years ago, for those who remember me:
Forget Nordkapp, Lofoten and all north of Trondheim. The west part of the south part of Norway has so many fun roads and lovely, small places. I have been in that area many summers, and there are still places I have never been to - and want to go to.
Yes, you might get rain, but pop over the mountains to the east for a few days, then, that is a dryer area.
Keep in mind mountains might look sunny and nice, but it is cold up there! So bring clothes for a normal scottish winter.

Mosquitoes love tourists.

Enjoy!

Liv, a native. :)

Great reply, thank you, Liv.

PS I think you might struggle to persuade bods not to visit the Arctic Circle :D
