GS slayed.........

If they are as so powerful as you say, and that is certainly a fact, why do they need more power adding, if the power is really added......:nenau

You ride a WMB so just wouldn't 'get it' :D

Andres

PS ........and feck off with your sideways digs at Hilltop, let it go, you're turning into that wanker Engineer
PPS Buy my knife, I need the money :kissy2

Wrong answer Andres, I am truly trying to learn the difference between the KTM,s and BMW as maybe later I just might get one, and stop trying to cause confusion by talking about something that is irrevelant to what I asked, now if you have a real answer, fine if not, leave it alone, and let someone with knowledge explain why more power is needed, if any is added, or is it a fuel thing.

You're getting this thread confused with all the Hilltop threads you're posting on, the discussion here is why would you want all the power that a KTM has, not how to tune one ............ and on the basis tanneman has, IMHO, answered the question perfectly :thumb2

I am certainly not, but I tried to get a simple answer, I see you personally cannot give it so move on time, carry on all is well.

Less is more.

IMHO the 790 is a better bike on and off road than the 1290,unless you are nutty and need an excess of power.Or if you ride two-up.
Plenty of power for most, 280 mile range and great handling due to the genius fuel tank and resultant low c of g.

Bikes are getting too advanced with too many bloody gizmos and switches.

And they’re too bloody heavy for fuckers like me with failing body parts.

I probably only really need my 790R and Svartpilen.

Cheers martin makes sense, and that is what I am looking for in a couple of years or maybe less who knows, body also in bits, and for the odd 2 up is it ok power wise, or just not comfy enough for the pillion....:beerjug:

Smogbob. A BMW wraps you in comfort and gives you a sense of control the minute the wheels starts turning. That is what it is good at and probably why many owners buy the GS because of its easy confidence inspiring nature. The KTM on the other hand won't be so forgiven. It is a bike that demands more concentration, more input to get the rewards of riding it. Think of it this way. One is like foreplay, the other one you bitch slap to get it going. A bit extreme in explanation but I hope you would understand the difference in the make up of the bikes. The KTM is also way lighter than the BMW and once the revs go north the difference is most notable. The way the BMW boxer produces torque at low rpm flatters the rider and makes this a good bike for low speed turns in the Alps with the kitchen sink loaded. The suspension on the KTM is a bit sharper, more reactive and more feel than the BMW with telelever but as far as brakes go there is not much difference. More squeeze required on the KTM as it doesn't link the front and rear brakes like the beemer but equally effective. Not much in it between the bikes but massive difference in feel. You either like an orange frame or prefer the Moto Guzzi saggy tits look :D

Cheers for that nice and clear, think I will stick with my old man style bike then..............:beerjug:

Only those with less power seem to think more is pointless.

My S10 had "plenty of power", except when it missed an overtake the KTM could easily pull off.

I expect the new 1250 will match the KTM to 6k, maybe beat it slightly at very low revs, and will be "as good" in the real world....

...if that world does not find occasional use of excessive power fun, or the ability to spank past 3 nose-to-tail cars in one hit instead of being stuck behind them for ages, or not worrying that if you don't find a traffic jam immediately after leaving GTI Johnny at the lights he will whizz by and embarrass you.

An 800 GS rider could make the same point over the 1250, and so on, until the guy on a 250 V-Strom proclaims nobody needs more than 7 BHP (or whatever they fart out).

I could be happy with less power, certainly less weight, but I need a large bike for my gangly frame, so might as well have a fast bike I fit on over a slower one, even if 99.9% of the time I don't need the extra, but I reckon I used it 100 times on my Alps trip this year.

Point of order here: Regardless of all the kW based willy waving, shouldn't it be Slain ?

Giles would kick my arse point to point even if I was riding his KTM and he was on a 600 Bandit.

The bike is only part of the journey Grasshopper..

Valid point would the Orange mothership dare real offroad, get ready for a video...............;)

There’s plenty of videos of KTM’s destroying GS’s off-road ;)
