starter motor magnet came dislodged and nearly left me stranded

magnet is complete

first question would anyone recommend gluing it back in with epoxy glue and filling the gaps with the other magnets to maybe keep them positioned (not loose at minute)

or

buy a new starter ?

I do about 2000 miles a year and the bike has 50000 on it and this is the original starter.

is there a direct replacement/brand I can go into my local motor factors and buy ?

the valeo is very expensive and I am not keen on unbranded ebay Chinese knock offs

do bosch, denso or a half decent car brand make a direct replacement I can simply ask for over the counter. I assume this starter fits a car somewhere, anyone know which car ?

I bought a new aftermarket one for around £60 and once that was fitted, I took the old valeo apart to give it a clean and check up.
Found one magnet loose but, that may have come off when removing the rotor part due to the force of the magnets. Used a 2-part epoxy glue to stick it back in and held in position with a clamp.

Starter motor works OK again with no screeching and may swap back the OEM motor next year to try.

Used the step by step guide from this site and YouTube hints.

I'm in two minds, I think it can be glued but after 50,000 miles its old and will probably give more bother later

if I saw a branded starter for £100 ish I would put a new one straight in

but it doesn't seem that simple, £180 valeo who I wouldn't generally shout about for quality or a chinese copy, its a car starter motor, I assume there is a decent brand available

I bought a CARGO starter for my Airhead

its well made I took it apart and checked it over before fitting it in the depths of my Airhead

It uses Spring clips along with Glue to keep the magnets in place

A lot cheaper than OE and seems good enough for me and I have been stripping and cleaning out the OEM ones for about 15 years when servicing peoples bikes

like the look of that although it may be chinese too but it has a name on the box I've heard of

thanks

I was cynical but the build quality convinced me

Check your battery earth strap to the engine and if you can't get it out and another one

I use the steel diagonal top bolt just above and in front of the alternator

I've had one of those £55 eBay ones fitted for 20,000 miles and it has been faultless. Seems like an improvement on my old Valeo one.

Could be Chinese but the HC in HC-Cargo is Holger Christiansen; Danish based and one of the largest refurb specialists in Europe, they have a pretty good reputation. The aftermarket division of the company I work for does a lot with these guys and they are approved refurbishers for Valeo, Bosch and bunch of other well known industry names. Sure, they'll be refurbing your starter at their Polish facility with components purchased from China/Korea/Vietnam/Thailand or eastern Europe but given the cost pressures in the automotive sector, thats where the OE manufacturers are sourcing their components from anyway. Bosch sold their starter/alternator interests to SEG (Shanghai Electrical Group) a couple of years back and a lot of the Denso parts are assembled in Italy using Far East/ eastern European components, so the old rules of a quality brand name no longer apply. Welcome to the minefield.

I have already glued the magnet back in, although not rebuilt it yet

but its always going to be on my mind that it may fail again and the thought of trying to bump start the big girl isn't appealing at all.

so for the sake of £73 I have ordered an HC cargo made starter

job done I hope

thanks

Hc cargo starter fitted and used at the weekend. Bike seems to fire up quicker than before. So happy
