Hi I'm ok using basecamp but what concerns me is if my pc goes tits up with all my routes done but not yet loaded to my Nav V1. On my old mapsource there was a folder which updated regularly to my external hard drive I cant see this is possible with basecamp so are they saved on the basecamp Garmin server . In other words if I reload basecamp to a new or repaired pc would it have all my folders created in it .
Cheers in anticipation :beerjug:

You can do a manual backup to external HD in Basecamp for Mac, presume same on a PC.

Am away from Mac at moment and can’t remember exactly what menu it’s in but would guess the File menu.

Just copy your routes, favourites and anything else onto a memory stick and / or back then up to something like Dropbox.

Hmmm, I could have sworn there was a profile backup to cloud option on Basecamp so you could keep your files up to date on various PCs. Can't see it so maybe I've got mixed up with other software.

Yes you were correct but sadly this was the message from Garmin last year:

"Note: This is to inform you that Garmin Cloud services will be discontinued after May 20th, 2018. Users can access these applications through the published date to retrieve their data. Users who wish to sync their data to a third party Cloud storage service may do so by modifying the Database Options in BaseCamp to point it to a folder under the Cloud storage service root. See related content for more information"

Well the computer had to be changed and I'm still not sure how to Just copy as you say. My problem is I can't find a folder with my basecamp routes on the pc only in basecamp.

On my hardrive I can find a folder with all my old mapsource ones but not one with basecamp routes.

I recently had two routes sent me by email I managed to down load them and drag and drop to basecamp but I cant actually find a basecamp folder on my hard drive .
Thanks in anticipation :beerjug:

I use a Mac but here goes:

On a Mac, files, folders, routes or whatever it is they are called, appear in a long list down the side of the BaseCamp screen by default.

I can either highlight the folder / route or file and drag it to a memory stick or, I can highlight them and click on Export (I think it is) and choose say Dropbox as the place to export to.

Is this any help:

Most of it is complete gibberish to me. Why they can’t just write one simple explanation with a screen shot or two or make a video I have no idea.

Basecamp saves the routes and all your info in a library.
You can put your library where you prefer, and backup manually same way you did with MS.

I keep my library on Dropbox, so I have all my data synced between my two macs. The only thing is... never open Basecamp on both computers at the same time (I've done it once. No tragedy. You roll back the data from Dropbox).

Just point both copies of Basecamp to the same library file.

Goes without saying that you can backup the library file somewhere else safe too... even though Dropbox will do that for you already.

I've just chucked a quick video together on YouTube .....it is just a quick hash, but yo'll get the idea. It'll be available in about 5 mins

the easiest way to back up everything is to do a Baakup and save it to a usb stick, you can do one each time you add a route if you wish and give each backup consecutive names, pic below as reference, or if you wish to save only the routes use export and save them to a usb stick also.

but I cant actually find a basecamp folder on my hard drive

Search anything with a .bclibrary extension on your computer. Include hidden folders.

A good a tip as any.

One of the very few things I miss about my PC was the ease of creating and ordering Mapsource or BaseCamp files and folders. I do need to sit down and better organise mine on my Mac.

Thanks for all your help

I was on my last attempting of swapping over pc's and tranfering collection of routes following the useful tips it wasn't until I altered the bloody file type it worked until then there was nothing there .
So basically sent to external hard drive and then recovered into basecamp on new pc after altering file type.
They now need sorting out into appropriate folders etc but I can do that at my leasure

Supported file types shown on the link did it

They are. It's the library file indicated above.

Most software nowadays use what is called a "monolithic libraries". You see it as a single file generally. Easier to handle.
The content of the library can be edited by its own application (Basecamp in this case). If you want to export/share individual routes, same, via Basecamp as others have explained above.

It would be great if you could do a ‘Mac for dummies’ line by line simple explanation of how you did all this, starting right at the beginning. If there could be pictures, so much the better. If you could start it for someone line me who already has miles of routes, folders, files or whatever in BaseCamp on their Mac, excellent. I now have so many that BaseCamp can take up to two minutes to load sometimes, despite running on a pretty decent desktop.

Please keep it really simple as, whilst I can whiz about in Mapsource, in BaseCamp and on a Garmin device, I do not know one end of a computer from another. I am just happy that they work.

I note your warning not to have BaseCamp open on two computers. I am pretty good at not doing things on computers.

Thanks,

Richard

Sure.

It's fairly simple to set up Basecamp that way.
I'll write it up tonight.

Thank you. I always export to Dropbox or a memory stick as a .gpx file. I hadn’t considered exporting as a .gdb file. What, for a complete computer illiterate, is the advantage of one over the other, please. Or do I guess right that it’s as simple as a .gdb file can only be read by Garmin software, whilst a .gpx file is a more universal exchangeable file, readable by say a TomTom?

Thank you.

PS How was your evening in F*cking? And how about Titz?

I won't do a video with voiceover like Fluffmeister's though... because mine might end up sounding like an 'Allo 'Allo! episode :)
