Depends, most times the fault is in either the connections to the slip ring or the first couple of turns, and a good rewinder can fix them quickly and cheaply wothout a complete rewind.

It is possible to check the connections with by carefully cutting through the lacquer on the connecting wires with a box cutter blade and testing from there. The slip ring simply presses off.
If the fault is deeper in the windings my guy can also rewind them at a competitive cost with finer wire which he claims gives a higher output, but I am open to correction on that.

I had a faulty starter motor and needed to replace ASAP with no time to get the original Valeo apart to investigate, so for speed and cost I bought one from my local motor factor (recommended by a gent of this parish, I forget who, but many thanks) made by HC Cargo which is owned by bosch. The starter motor looks identical to the Bosch one, with Bosch stickers on casing, and you can buy all the components to repair it. Has a 2 year warranty and cost £50 inc vat brand new.
Useful to have on the shelf just in case of while yours is repaired.
It seems to spin over quickly. HC Cargo are based in Nottingham and can tell you your local stockist.
Part no: 111334. fits the majority of boxers from R75, 80, 90, 100.
Type this number into their website search bar for more info and technical specs.
Hope that helps

Yep, on the HC cargo website you can match the original part number of BMW, Bosch, Valeo etc to the HC cargo equivalent.
