Leaving in around an hour, the three of us again (Tyrone, Jon and me aka Easy Sushi and BluesnTwos) heading to folkestone for the Chunnel crossing around lunchtime. Hoping to reach Reims today then on to Dijon and the Alps tomorrow picking up the Route Naploeon to take us down to the Monaco area to start the Route Des Grand Alpes proper.

Camping all the way and looking forward to more good riding, banter and outdoor cooking...:thumb2

Moi aussi.I’m leaving on 15th.

When are you back, Chris ? I’m doing it the other way-RDGA then RN and Vercors between 16th and 23rd.

Have you stayed in the Citadel at Albertville? Had a night there on the way down. A hidden gem.

Morning all,

i was intending to write this report up at the end of the trip but I have some time now and the WiFi here is good so though I’d do a quick update..

Day 1...

in a word, uneventful.... I hate the ride down to Folkestone, it’s long monotonous and boring. Made even worse as the M20 was closed this weekend (J9-11) resulting in horrendous traffic all the way to the terminal... What is normally a crap 2hr ride turned into a really crap 3 hour ride!!
Anyway we arrived safe and after a typical tosser style lunch (Leon I said, feck that Burger King is open they said) we were ready to board the train...

From Calais we headed for Reims, we had always planned to stay in a hotel on the first night as we wanted and early start and a quick get away Sunday morning..The ride to Reims was all motorway and took us the best part of 3 hours.. Mr Garmin got somewhat confused at some point and we ended up on a 30k diversion that aimed us at Belgium, once we realised that all was not well we were back on track and soon enough we arrived in the outskirts of Reims... The weather on the way down wasn’t too bad although we did ride through a few heavy showers, they weren’t sustained so at least we were dry when we stopped to look at Hotels. We hadn’t booked anything so Booking.com did it’s job and we found ourselves booked into the Best Hotel Reims (yes that’s the name of it!) in a triple room for €80. The hotel is in an industrial estate with secure parking and is surrounded by Chinese buffet restaurants and a grill bar. So after we got ourselves sorted it was out to explore the area and fill ourselves with the no sleep, heart racing, monosodiumglutifeckingmate filled Chinese buffet which was actually quite nice:D...
So that was day 1 done, day 2 will come shortly with more pics...:thumb2

You know you have to endure the pain to get a 'Smart Motorway' it will make things SO much better:blast

You'll soon be at the good stuff:cool:

We last did the RDGA about four years ago.

We included the Bol D’or And then Route Napoleon on the way back.

On the Saturday we were camping atPaul Richard there was a Mistral.

I’ve never been so cold.

Day 2 Reims to Dijon and beyond...

After a decent nights sleep we were up early and heading for the breakfast room. Personally, I wasn’t expecting much from breakfast but we were all pleasantly surprised.. After fueling up on croissants, cereals and baguettes we loaded the bikes and headed off...
Last year I rode this route from Reims to Dijon and found the most fantastic road.. it’s fast, wide and twisty with loads of room for overtakes and making progress.. Soon enough we were in Dijon where we stopped for some lunch and to plan the next part of the route. We didn’t really have a destination in mind we just wanted to get as close the the start of the RDGA just south of Geneva as possible..As we were chomping through the first of what was to be many McDonald’s snacks the skies were turning grey all around us and it appeared the weather gods had fecked off...

A few pics before the weather went to rats...
