Round Norway with a Fridge September 2019

Norway. On a white Harley? What could possibly go wrong!


The first time I took the bike home someone commented that it looked like I was carrying around two small refrigerators... Well I like cold beer so lets take it to Norway then!!

The original plan was to head up to the Lofoten Islands camp out for a few nights (the Northern Lights can be visible sometimes from September) and then head back down and onto the West Coast.

Motorway tedium to start but only for a while.

I booked a Hostel room in Puttgarden Germany so I could catch the Ferry to Rodby in Denmark the next morning. Arrived in the dark but the landlady welcomed me in and I settled down for the night.

The plan was to go via Mora and Oestersund (empty roads higher speed limits) then swing a left for Trondheim and up to the Arctic Circle at Mo I Rana.

I even stopped briefly here in an attempt to kick their ice cream stand over but the Staff must have noticed my intentions and quickly moved it inside.

Should have gone to Spain.

Bugger!

Weather forecast for the next few days further North was the same shite so a serious change of plan was required. The situation to the West looked more promising...

After a few of these in a Bar in Ostersund that evening I decided to head West the next day.

in other words "Go West" as we the "Crew" in the Gnarley Bar sometimes sing..

I fancied doing the Trollstigen Pass over the next couple of days and headed towards Andalsnes for the evening and booked another Hostel room.

Think yourself lucky at this time of the year. Our last visit, in August, was cold, wet & miserable all the way. Some mornings it was colder than the inside of my fridge; well it did snow several times, but it usually melted away by about 11am. Like you said, Spain is the softer option.

August is still the height on the tourist season so better to go in September when most have gone home also the weather can be generally more settled.

It was time to have a break from all this excitement so I booked myself into a Hostel at Lilehammer for a couple of nights as the next two days was forecasting rain everywhere.

They had been on the road for five months (leaving from Thailand in April) and had travelled overland through China, Mongolia and Russia. They were heading North to Tromso and then Nordkapp before finishing in Helsinki (pun ) where the bikes would be stored for the winter.
They were then planning to fly home and return in the Spring to ride the bikes home. Brilliant.

I waved them off the next morning.

Rest day today so wandered into the town and also had a look at the Ski Slope from the 1994 Winter Olympics.

Excellent photos..... you probably made the right decision to change route - We were a little in front of you and weather on Lofoten was dire. There for for three days and all three days were heavy rain and 60+mph winds.
