Hi Guys and Gals, I am aware there are many specialist, engineers, mechanics and home diy'ers on this forum and I would like to ask for your advices.
I have an 07 1200 GS 32,000 miles and yesterday dug it out of the garage for my daily commute and noticed a bit of oil on the sump guard (ally plate bolted under the engine).
When I got home I took it off to clean under the engine and i found that the front of the engine was dirty but dry, the off side was dry, the near side was a bit oily but my main concern was the oil at the back of the engine from what i would call in numpty terms - the gear box bell housing where it fits onto the back of the engine!!

I put the near side wetness down to where it is parked on its side stand, i have no idea how long it has been like this so I have cleaned as much as possible and used it today and will have a ride this weekend to see if there is an obvious leak.

My question is- has any other member had this situation? if so where did it leave to? engine gearbox strip worse case scenario. Can the gearbox be taken off the engine while in the frame pulled from the rear or is it easier to remove form the frame.

Appreciate any thoughts ideas or craziness, many thanks
Potter

Any clutch slip? Might be worth posting some photos if you have a chance

It’ll be either the rear crank seal, the balance shaft seal or gearbox input shaft seal ... nine times out of ten it’s the balance shaft seal. If it’s only a slight dribble I’d leave it see how it developes . It may contaminate the clutch friction plate over time, but I wouldn’t worry as you’ll be fitting a new friction plate anyway when/if you decide to replace the leaking seal, you’d be stupid not to seeing as it’s such a big job and you’re in there anyway.

Thanks Guys
I have not noticed any clutch slip Yet!! I will take a shot once it has got oily again and i appreciate your advice on the seals, i will leave it for now and see how it progresses.

Max points to Steptoe, he knew what was wrong, in at mechanics being done at the moment for new oil seals, no clutch slip but clutch past it's use by date so also being replaced while all stripped down..Thanks Steptoe.
