I've just added a profile pic; it's within the requisite dimensions and size (presumably it'd not upload if it wasn't) and shows in my profile when I view my profile but not on my posts. Any suggestions?

That's because it's a profile pic not an avatar. If you want a cute fluffy animal to be displated in the orange box beside your posts, you need to set it as an avatar.
