I have a 1977 R100/7 which I’ve owned from 1980 and it has always had an S fairing on it.
My question is:
Would the handlebars of the R100S been lower than the original R100/7?

Has it got S bars on it?
Reason is 40 years later I’ve got used to sitting in a more upright position with wider bars (Like my V7 behind it) and I’m thinking of making it original again.

I think the standard European bars for the R100/7 would be those you currently have...... Here is an R100/7T (1st Photo) I owned a while back, and I would guess these are probably the same bars you have on your bike.

This second bike (photo 2) came with the low bars as per photo 1, I swapped them out for BMW intermediates, which as far as I'm aware are those fitted to late seventies Police bikes.......I always thought they were brilliant at the time, found a set and used them on various bikes for years......until they ended up on this R100 and it was too much hassle to change back again. If you go for higher bars, it can involve new cables, new switchgear with longer harnesses and a new upper brake hose (or cable)

And the third photo is a bike I currently have, a 13,000m from new R100 with the standard low bars.......which I'd quite like to fit an S fairing to.....if you should remove yours:D

I believe the intermediate bars are no longer available, however, those fitted to the 1991-1996 R100R appear to be near as makes little difference the same. Motobins list them.......full on RT bars are easy to find but higher still.

Mick.

Had the some problem on my 75 / 7, the original bars were too high to work with a type S type faring and lower bars had to be fitted.
Like you are proposing I removed the S type faring and fitted bars which were higher and further back.
I replaced the faring with a Givi A210 from 'bins which is neat , unobtrusive and gives a surprising amount of protection.
Fits to the headlamp bolts, not to the bars like the Guzzi one in the background, the switch side needs a little work with a hacksaw and file, but works OK in the end.

Many thanks to you both for such a comprehensive answer. The first bars look exactly the same as mine.

Underneath the crash pad of the low miler R100, it's exactly the same bars again....apart from being drilled for heated grips, same bars also fitted to the R100CS...

There are two types of RT bars, pre 1980 and post 1981. The pre 1980 are more suitable for fitting to an unfaired bike. I think ST bars are similar.

That would explain what I've always believed to be intermediate bars......always good to learn something..

After a few false starts with rubbish pattern bars I moved the bars with Rok type risers.
No need to pay Rok's silly prices, they are available on Banggood or AliExpress for a fraction of the price.

After a couple of weeks and a few hundred miles I’ve rebonded with the bike it’s bars and it’s S fairing and am going to leave it as it is.
Sometimes you need a bit of time.
I’d forgotten how comfortable it really is. Just a different riding style from my more modern bikes.
Thanks again for all your advice regardless.
