Trip report - Operation Clusterfuck

So on arrival at Thun I have a coffee and look at the forecast and rainfall radar.

My choices are,

1. Go East and get pissed wet through for 3 days.

2. Go South and intercept the RDGA.

3. Stay at Thun and sleep in McDonald’s Car Park under my Tarp for 4 nights.

Option 2 gets it, right turn, out Leysin in and go for it.

Planning on the hoof indeed.

I’ll crack on and see how far I get. Weather v nice so I recon I’ve chosen well.

I turn off to visit Leysin where my brother used to work and I visited as a 15 year old, travelled solo then and still doing the same now.

I feel v old as I sip a coffee, this was the place I got my first Walkman.

If you’d told me then I’d still be travelling solo now and with a advice which is a phone, movie player, Walkman and mobile porn cinema I’d not have believed you.

Quick look at map, sod it let’s go for Morzine and intercept the RDGA tomorrow.

Cheap hotel booked, I’m Bel Vita”d up large, let’s do some distance.....

OCD kicks in. I can’t handle the disparity of 2 horizons so main stand it has to be.....

Pitstop at Aigle, sentimental reasons and then on lovely passes to Morzine. I’ve skied there but don’t remember it too well.

Accommodation Is cool.

Again basic but functional is the way I’d describe it.

Other people might say cheap :)

Oh I’ve always wished people would put their accommodation details down, hence doing so on this RR. .....

It’s this place, good WiFi, 2 mins walk to town and 28 quid with breakfast. Nice owner. Top stuff.

I amble into town and grab a quick coffee. Been a long day so I’m knackered.

Ski resorts are odd places out of season I always recon.

Closed bars and a feeling of general emptiness.

Still, it’s still pretty.

20 min walk round until I recognise some bits I remember, back to digs and crash out.

Should be good day tomorrow, RDGA here we come.......

My first tour of the modern era was in 2000. The tailpack on my bike was full of chargers and cables for Nokia mobile phone about £1 per text to another UK mobile in Europe if I recall correctly), digital camera, digital video camera, and MP3 player (or may even have been a CD walkman). Separate sat nav on the bike.

I remember joking with a fellow tourer that it would be great if you could have all those functions in one device, with absolutely no expectation that such a thing would exist in my lifetime, let alone be affordable. Now it's all in one smartphone, which massively outperforms all the individual devices. And I get hugely annoyed if there isn't WiFi...

Indeed. God knows what we’ll be doing in another 30 years.....well other people I mean

I shall either be gone or sitting in a rocking chair smelling of wee and whinging about everything :)

Sorry. Just read back. The bags are Kreiga ones. Can’t rem name but about 50 quid each.

Don’t look smart but they great bits of kit.

One has all my tooling and puncture kit.

One has my emergency kit such as beacon, torch, bothy bag etc.

Gets a bit of weight up front

Just checked. They’re OS6 type

Day 5

Awake to classic mountain weather. Mist and a bit dank generally.

Breakfast included so I stock up and get going.

It’s a damp start but not actually raining.

After about an hour I remember that I have rain mode so engage that.

I can’t feel the difference really, can anyone really tell ???

Anyway, time to tiptoe along the route until I get tired then hunker down

To cut a long story short ish.......

It’s fucking wet, it’s fucking windy, and cold.

The highlight is Col Galiber

It’s snowing on top and it gets to zero deg.

I’d have taken a pic but didn’t want to stop.

A bike ahead paves the way, vis gets to literally 20m at times

After the summit, boom, the southern side is epic.

That crest is a real ooh wow moment.

When I get to the bottom I immediately recognise the cafe etc, I’m sure we’ve all done that, ambling along and suddenly recognising roads cafes junctions etc from old trips.

Anyway ......

Good breakfast in accommodation thrown in. I’d recommend this place if you’re happy with basic stuff done well

Best get a bed sorted as I’m fucking frozen and soaked.

God bless the EU and free data roaming.

I go for a “nearest hotel at pikey bastard rate’ search and voila, Couple miles down road. Sorted :)

It’s this place. V handy for col. cheap at 25 euros. V duscreet hamlet location.

I go out for a bumble about.

There’s nothing here which is great. Few pics and early night.

I smell a monstrous day coming on tomorrow. I always try and do 1 v long day per trip. Tomorrow is to be it.

The silence is broken by a v twin on the over run, some fellow “fuck me that was cold” bed searchers rock up.

They invite me for drinks. Always an awkward moment as I don’t socialise well so I politely wish them Bon voyage and hit the hay.......
