drive shaft seized till the final drive

My mate, who has a 2016 R1200RS (8500 mainly dry miles), managed to slide it down the road just before Christmas. No worries, as his insurance were really good and arranged for it to be picked up, assessed and duly authorised the necessary repairs at at specialist repair centre, nearly 300 miles away.

One of the items to be replaced is the. Final drive unit, due to it being scraped on the lower edge. All was going well, until it came to replacing the final drive unit. The dreaded call came, along the lines of “were now have all the panels painted, and are starting to fit the replacement items, but have come across an issue. We can’t separate the drive shaft from the final drive. We have spoken to the insurance company and they say, they will not cover any additional costs”.

Fortunately the repair has a good relationship with the local BMW dealer and they manage to source a replacement drive shaft for him under a goodwill gesture. However, he has to pay £150 labour. Who’s was really positive, as it would have cost him upwards of £600 had they not.

The point of this is. I had my month old GSA in bits back in 2018, greasing the shaft and splines when he came around for a coffee. He scoffed at me doing it on such a new bike, saying “it doesn’t need doing, it is brand new. You should never have a problem”. I even offered to do his, but he declined! Mine won’t have a problem for sure ;)

Is this post making the argument for greasing the final drive splines:nenau

:jes

I best make sure I dont throw my bikes, cars and van down the road then :D

Reason I greased my splines is because of the Rubber Gator.

If that rubber gator splits (as it does), you cannot replace it WITHOUT shaft separation from the final drive.

So a simple low cost fix is turned into a nightmare when rusted together.

Gator can split with pressure wash sometimes.
