Hi all fellow BM riders, mechanics. Hoping to change soon to k1600gt sport but currently with R1200RS se sport. There is apparently an issue notified by BMW with the 'gearbox' which is preventing me picking new bike up and many others. Does anyone know any details. Doesn't sound serious as bikes in for service can be returned to rider. :thumby:

Greetings Chris & welcome to the forum.....:thumby:

No idea re: issue, but no doubt a fellow member with said bike may have news.

Welcome along ;)

You're hardly likely to get an easy time with your name :D

Are you still in the market for a K16 OP?

There is news, from the media in NL about the K16 Delivery Stop order, but please don't take this as gospel.

It seems BMW admit there is a problem with the selector forks, whereby the gearbox could, in extreme circumstances, select 2 gears at the same time, leading to a lock up & possible loss of control of the motorcycle. If true, it sounds a tad more serious than I was expecting TBH, so there can be little doubt that a recall must be imminent (11/2016 to date).

Here is the latest on the K16 gearbox issue, translated from German with Google...........

'' As part of a recall campaign, BMW Motorrad is replacing motorcycle models K 1600 GT (0F01 / 0F11), K 1600 GTL (0F02 / 0F12), K 1600 excavator (0F51 / 0F53) and K 1600 Grand America ( 0F51 / 0F53) of the production period September 2016 - September 2019 Parts of the gearbox. Affected by the action are about 20,000 vehicles worldwide. In Germany 2243 vehicles.

The facts: BMW Motorrad has found in ongoing field observations that it may cause damage to the system composite shift fork / gearshift sleeve / gear wheel in individual cases. As a result, the function of the transmission is no longer ensured. Under certain circumstances, this can result in a switching operation to a double engagement of two gears. A critical driving condition can not be excluded. BMW Motorrad has therefore decided recall the above motorcycles and retrofit the gearboxes accordingly. The holders of the affected motorcycles will be informed by BMW Motorrad. The recall is free for customers. Vehicles that are already produced but not yet delivered are subject to a delivery lock and will be retrofitted before delivery.

Until 2016, the gearboxes for the K 1600 models (type K48) were manufactured by Getrag in Germany. In 2016, the machines and tools were relocated to Torqtec in North Carolina, USA. Since then, the K 1600 transmissions - as well as the R nineT transmissions - have been supplied from there. which are already produced but not yet delivered, are subject to a delivery lock and will be retrofitted before delivery. No timings as yet, but a full recall is imminent for anyone with a bike manufactured since reverse gear was introduced.
