Hi Folks,

So whats the thoughts on fork oil? I have a 2009 with 33K on the clock, there isnt any leaks or anything but over the winter im looking to get the shocks overhauled and some springs to match my weight. Whilst i was going to get this done i was thinking of removing the forks and getting them tidied up and thought oil change might be an idea. However since the fork oil doesnt really do as much on the RT with the telelever then my thinking is does it really need changed?

Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on this?

Thanks
Mark

Basing my answer on your photograph we are going with your RT. Remember that on your RT the fork oil is just lubricating and doesn't control the normal damping issues. However, it does need to have anti frothing additives, so fork oil / atf oil is ideal.
I just use normal 10W fork oil. nothing special at all.

If that is your RT, the recommended oil is fork oil weight 10W such as:
https://www.bmwbayer.de/en/Fork-Oil-SAE-10W-BMW-R2V-K2V-K4V-R4V-F650

Just for added clarity, this is the part number for the fork oil BMW want you to use: 31 42 9 062 158

Thanks guys, yes its a 2009 R1200RT that i have.

Is there any guides available for the process or will my old hanes manual have everything i need to know? Reason i ask is that im not at home at the moment.

Cheers..
