Have you tried to kick start a Commando, recently....?
Not for a few months, it’s been a busy summer so mine has being lying dormant for ages.
Have you tried to kick start a Commando, recently....?
Completely stripped now
A bit of cleaning to do then and removal of swinging arm bush before the lot goes for either painting or powder coating, not really sure is the best anyone with experience of either? Or both..........
If your going down the powder coating route have a read at this article

I used a lot of the info in prepping my frame for coating years ago and time spent now is time saved later on the rebuild.
looks good - you'll need a 4 pole starter though.

I had a yellow 750 Commando S Type reg. No. NTH 298J, I bought it from 2 Wheel Services in Bridgend in 1971. It was a revelation after my 1966 BSA Lightning. I raced it in the early 70’s at Llandow and the North Gloucester Road races and the lowest position I ever had was 5th. Mind you, the last race I ever had it stopped when I was leading, the coils were mounted under the front of the petrol tank and holed themselves rubbing against the down tubes of the frame! Still, it was a brilliant bike that I toured on, commuted on and raced and I would love another someday. As for kick starting, it was a doddle, justease over compression and then give it a firm kick, first time, every time!
In your OP you said you wanted to modernise it - therefore powder coat it - easier and cheaper, and arguably more durable than a decent paint job. However, personally, I would paint it for authenticities sake here- powder coat (good as it can be) is IMHO the easy get out of jail option, far to commonly used inappropriately. But what do I know.
That’s not very helpful is it?......
Have to say, it does look like the surface hardening’s on the way out.......

Is that the 'Eco' low-lift version ?
