Norton Commando 850mk3....coming back to life...

They certainly are.:thumb And even better when they’re in the frame:beerjug:

My two sons came over today to put the engine in,obviously whilst staying at a safe distance............;)
All went well with no damage to the frame,it was actually fairly straightforward.

Did you make sure the rose nuts fit before fitting the engine? :augie

 Why wouldn’t they?............

The main reason is that they’re not all the same. Nothing major but I bought 4 of which one fitted as it should, one was a bit tight and two simply didn’t fit.

Even the rose part varies according to who made them. If you bought RGM ones I’ve got a decent RGM supplied tool for tightening them and it can go in the post if you ever want to borrow it.,

Thanks Andy, to be honest I haven’t looked at them since I took the pipes off 10 years ago:eek: although there never seemed a problem with them. The ones I have are bronze I think with a big fuck off tool to tighten them,so hopefully will be ok............................I better check:blast

Hopefully you won’t have the same issue as I did which was the nuts didn’t bottom out on the seals so I leant on the spanner a bit harder than I should have done and the inserts which had previously been welded into the head popped the weld and I had to send the head away to have it done properly. The company who did the second repair supplied new rose nuts and all was well in the World.

If they don’t bottom out you’ll get no compression on the seals meaning the nuts are constantly vibrating loose which you really don’t want. Put a bit of solder in the bottom and make sure it gets flattened when you tighten the nuts for a trial fit and you’ll know you’ve got it right 😀

Thanks for the info Andy, I am looking into it......:thumb

Forgive my ignorance of Commando stuff, but is that spring part of the engine mounting system? Some sort of vibration control device? It does look a bit Heath-Robinson.

I fitted a head steady with a rubber bush built into it pushbike seat springs

I’ve also got braided hoses feeding the oil to the cylinder head rather than something out of a school chemistry lab.

Yes it does look a little Heath Robinson but it does work.It is rubber mounted too.

Yes you have a different one to me. I kept mine std as I didn’t know any better.....:D

I also have braided hoses for the cylinder head feed, but I forgot to send them down to him when he did the engine:blast I’ll change them myself before I start her up.

It’s a good job you can cope with a bit of piss taking, I have to deal with it all the time :D

The head steady is a bit of a nothing matter because if it works it’s good enough but the braided hoses, I’d fit them because it’s a major disaster if a normal one decides to let you down. It’s like brake hoses, standard rubber ones are plenty good enough but braided ones make you think they’re better therefore they are better ;)

Carbs fitted, new premiers. Supposed to be better than original mk1’s.we shall see:rolleyes:
