Volcanoes at Arenal, not too far from San Jose, Nicoya peninsula is very nice, especially if you surf, lots parks, waterfalls etc and lots of wildlife. We found it quite expensive( down to the Americans apparently) especially for food if self catering, was told it is a 3 tier system, local price, resident(expat) price & tourist, we found supermarkets had no prices on stuff, although restaurant prices didn’t seem too bad(jan 16).
Road surface can change from fine to unmade in a few metres which can make for slow travelling.
If you are in howler monkey territory take earplugs and they will steal/break pool toys and shit on your patio:)
Loved our trip and would go back, having previously been to Belize we thought it would be comparable price wise with Asia, but still a stunning and safe place to visit, but other Central American countries are cheaper.

Just had a look where we went, We met my daughter, hubby and two kids(1 & 3) out there in jan17(not16 as I said) it was an end of maternity leave blowout, Giles is a surfer and it is a must do apparently.
They had 10 days in Domincal in a national park, they said it was amazing, not quite so developed, then we met them in Arenal for the volcanoes, stunning if it’s not raining and low cloud which it does a fair bit!!
We then all went to Santa Teresa and Nosara for a week at each, we had a house in each, they are 200km apart but 4+ hour drive, both nice places with long beaches ok for surfing and swimming, beach bars, restaurants, sunsets etc.
Once you get away from San Jose the roads change dramatically and road signs are a rarity, sat navs are an expensive extra on hire cars!! 4x4 are recommended because of the state of some of the roads(we managed without but it was rough in places), plenty of waterfalls just off lots of roads and abundant wildlife, toucans, coatimundi and various monkeys.
It is a stunning country to visit and safe(for Central America) but we did get through a lot of cash:)
Enjoy.

It's where he shot the monkeys for food. Something he felt very guilty about.

A great read. Thanks for recommending it.

...what a great country - personal events and work got in the way of much planning but as Booking.Com seems to work well here, first few stops are planned and will then make it up as we go along.

It’s a modern world - Jimny hire car, Local SIM card, Waze, Booking.Com and Visa and that’s my adventure (spelt holiday) essentials complete. Tischiffely was a little more on his own :D
