Any idea why the app store tells me it's not available when I try to download/install to my lap top?

It's compatible so that's not the reason.

Try deleting app store's preferences.
I had a similar issue for a different app update some time ago.

Cheers but still no joy........

Anyway, not to matter, I'll give it a couple of days and try again :)

Nope have it on my MacBook air and I can find it in the app store under MacOS Catalina. My MacBook is a 2012 model, so not new

I know what you mean but no, defo for desktops and laptops :thumb

Edit ~ beaten to it by casbar, mines a 2012/13 too (all be it a Mac Book Pro).

It did it automatically on my mac book, i had to do a re start but other than that it was auto installed
That was at least a week ago now

So to answer the OP question

I dont have a scooby

Like iPhones, the updates won't show up for machines that are too old to update.

If you go onto Apple's websites and look at machine requirements you may be able to see if it's available for yours. If it is, then you have a different problem such as enough hard disk space etc.?

You could also try looking in System Preferences and Software Update for it rather than the App Store. Also, make sure your Apple account is logged into with your Apple ID and password.

I'm certain what I've written will be of no help, just emptying my head. :comfort

Ha ha, I’ve done all of that Tufty - even run a diagnostic with Apple on line that assures me I’m good for Catalina.

I tell it to download and then get the screen shot in my OP......

Anyway, as you know, I’m shite with ‘puters so it must be me!
A couple of days off and another go with a fresh pair of eyes :)

If you're on the Twitters send a message to @applesupport

Although, I can actually email you the software, (I think).

I can give it a go if you like, text me if you want me to.

Have you gone to Apple Menu --> About this Mac --> System update to ensure the current system is fully updated first?

I recall that when I update the other week to Catalina, I had something similar happen. But I thought that was down to work installed system management stuff.

I rebooted in Safe Mode, downloaded Catalina in that and everything was fine....

Thank you :)

I think I'd rather download it 'properly' given my 'skills' and the possibility it'll fuck up my computer's relationship with Apple in the future if they didn't download it IYSWIM.

I'll have another go over the w/e and give you a shout if I really can't work it out, I like a challenge :beerjug:

I still get told the 'update is not available', as per my first screen shot, when I try to download from the app store

make sure you backup your Mac before installing, just in case.

My mac book pro is the same age as yours and runs Mojave too. I think we have a 32bit machine and Catalina is a 64 bit os so won’t work.
My wifes 2016 mac book pro (64 bit) and my newish imac have both updated to Catalina.

They all are 64.

Otto, what exact model do you have.
Go Apple Menu > About This Mac > in the window that appears click on "System Report" and then read Model Name and Model Identifier.

As I said above, there are sometimes some problems with the App Store update (I suppose this can affect the update via the control panel too). It is quite infuriating.

You might want to open the Terminal application and type the following command (and hit return):

PHP:
softwareupdate -l
Nothing will be installed. Don't worry. You just manually tell the computer to check for updates via the command line.

Bear in mind any 32 bit apps you currently have won’t run - like some of the Adobe suite prior to the subscription model, so run the app checker so you know what you’ll lose.

For Garmin users, Javawa doesn’t run and can’t be upgraded.

Also iTunes goes, and some people have reported syncing music to mobile devices afterwards
