701 long range anyone ?

I've had to keep looking at this, wondering what bothers me, It's the lack of knobs.
Skinny road tyres and how can you ever trust reckless panniers?

Apologies for lack of knobs. They’re all out on their GSs heading to Starbucks.

Skinny roads tyres ? Would fitting a 240 rear appease your worries ? :)

And you obviously have zero knowledge of Mosko Moto products.

Great post though :)

The reckless stuff is extremely good - very tough and very secure on the bike, but only a two minute job to undo the straps and take it all off.

I used mine for an off-road trip in Iceland last year, with camping kit and had no problems at all, despite chucking the bike in a river everything stayed dry and in place. The holster arrangement may not look pretty but it works very well in that you just undo a couple of clips and pull out the dry bags . When it's pissing down (which it does a lot in Iceland!) it's really easy to unpack and get stuff into your tent to keep everything dry.

Highly recommend :thumb2

Here's a pic of it all loaded and ready to go, with apologies to Bowser that it's fitted to the Huskies ugly sister ;)

I wish I could afford to ditch some of what I have now and go for the Mosko stuff, my problem is that I was bought some stuff by the wife as a Christmas present, so I am STUCK with it!!!!! Its shite but for polictical home life reasons I dare not get rid and buy something better :)

sorry about being rude towards your obviously wonderful steed, I ought to be more disposed towards them, as I have 990 Adv and 640 Adv, to be fair the 701 standard bike aint much better, its all that complicated bodywork up front where a fuel tank should be that just gets me

No offence taken Sir, and I would agree thatl Husky have made a good looking bike :beerjug:

The advantage of not having a fuel tank up front is the bike is a lot slimmer between yer legs (ooh err misses) which I quite like, but it obviously shifts weight more to the rear. I've fitted a 5 litre Rade tank to mine where the big air box used to be, which has given it well over 200 mile range, but that's not anywhere near what you'd get with the LR Husky version.

To be honest, the 701LR is still very slim as the tank up front is mainly forward and down. This gives you an idea :

So, back to my bike build.....decided to give up waiting for mate’s help.He promised to help me and I even offered to pay him, as he’s shit hot on the tools, unlike me.
But he said of course he didn’t want paying and would love to help, and would set aside a day this week to do it.He hasn’t, and when I messaged him the other day just to borrow a step drill bit, he said he was too busy to even go look in his garage for a few days, even though he’s furloughed...
So anyway, sod it.....in for a penny.....

I read and re-read the Nomad instructions and then dived in.

Starting with this :
78ca972743621311f088b5d643d9e742.jpg

Took the seat off, disconnected the battery and then took the front tank panels off, then unbolted the filler cap and undid the front tank so it could slide back.
Then I labelled all the wiring within the headlight and undid as many connectors as possible.
Next was to cut through the plastic shroud that houses the headlight and dash etc,to aid it’s removal.
Unbolted the indicators and took the dash to pieces to leave me with this :

8ec9d34c1f8adb9f702c721f26d42758.jpg

Next would be the hardest job of all-fitting two brackets with spacers which go either side of the ignition barrel and provide fixings for the top tower clamp.

I knew it would be a bastard as access is very limited, requiring mucho patience and a swivelly head torx bit.

This shows the issue, from the instructions, hence the orange frame but same for my 701 :

The torx bolt, circled has to be tightened from the direction of the arrow but the frame and airbox is in the way.VERY fiddly but took my time.

This then allowed the top clamp to be fitted.
The bottom clamp was another bastard as it used a U bolt which needs to go through a very tight spot behind the head stock :

But once done, you should end up with this :

Which I did:

I then constructed the tower, though not yet loctited, fitted the 12v sockets and USB socket :

Quick install to see it fits ok :

Then refitted the tank, tank covers and filler cap.
Also fitted bar risers, shown in situ above.

So that’s where I’m at. Took best part of 6 hours but no mistakes....yet.

Will sort some of the wiring/lights tomorrow and then book it in to a local auto elec specialist so they can get it all set up correctly,as going to need the LEDs spliced in to the existing wiring, and want a proper junction box thingy installed to take some of the feeds away from the battery terminals and get all the accessories correctly installed.

Then I’ll need to get the sticker kit installed properly.

The tool box/belly pan is in the post....so don’t expect that soon, given Nomad’s rather crap comms...

Still,I’ve made a good start.

This is how mines wired - dead easy to add extra widgets, either switched or battery live

Dash mounting. I'm going to add the Nomad road book holder and mount the AMPS mount to it as I've found the ram arm moves when my 276CX is mounted

Finished it today.
Quite chuffed that I managed the whole thing

Ok, the lights need wiring up , as do the accessory sockets etc,but I’m going to get a local auto elec specialist to do that.

Space is certainly tight inside the tower itself !!!

And then I’ll get a sign company to apply the graphics/decals properly.

Can you get a fully fuelled weight of the modded bike? I'd be really interested to know how it compares with a Yam T700.

Looking forward to hearing how it is on extended high speed use, the kind of thing I'll need to do to get from Glasgow to trail riding areas or to the south to get a ferry to Spain.

Well done, a tricky job that looks nicely done; I'd be fine with the wiring but don't blame you re the graphics as whenever I've tried it I always fuck it up............

What do the switches above the dash do? Oh and please, get the nuts on those switches aligned with some sort of consistency, that'd right do my OCD in :D

Ha ha. Those nuts haven’t been tightened fully yet as that’s one of the jobs for after the wiring is sorted.
I’m going to use one for heated vest, one for switching the beam setup on the lights. The other two will be spare in case I ever get a road book or such (probably unlikely). But I didn’t want to leave any blanks as looks neater.
I could wire in the lights as Nomad do a plug n play harness ( that I forgot to order) to convert the setup to twin lights.
But I’ve also got the two 12v sockets and double USB socket that needs wiring up.Plus there are too many leads on the battery terminals so I want to get one of those busbar thingies fitted that will tidy everything up.
I spoke to a mate last night who had a full sticker kit fitted by a local sign company and they charged him over £300 !!

I laid them out last night

Looked on YouTube and a heat gun seems to help . So fuck it , ordered one off Amazon and will have a go myself . Didn’t think I’d be able to fit the tower etc but gone ok so in for a penny .....

The 701LR weighs 155 kgs dry.
It holds 25 litres of fuel (12 and 13 litre F/R tanks) so about 20kgs and 2.5 litres of oil so about 2 kgs.
So wet weight should be 177kgs.
But that’s with a 300 miles range.
If you only fill one of the tanks then have about 150 miles range but weight down to about 167kgs.

Meanwhile the Tenere 700 has a listed wet weight of 204kgs.

So the 701LR is 27kgs lighter with both tanks full or 37kgs lighter with just one tank and similar (ish) range to the 700.
The Nomad tower weighs very little,a few kilos at most.

The whole reason for me getting the Nomad kit and Renazco seat is to be able to ride it to places like Asturias/Picos and then when I’m there just use the rear tank and go play offroad....
It’ll be overkill but I just fancied a lightweight bike with the range of a GSA that could tour if asked....

I’ve got the same switch layout on my 501 and they’re used as follows listed from the left hand side:
First one is wired accessories such as sat nav.
Second one keeps the dip beam on when you go to high beam giving the benefits of both and is excellent for going too fast on single track roads.
Third one is power outlets which on mine is one DIN socket, a 1amp USB and a 2.5A USB.
Fourth one overrides the thermostat and keeps the fan switched on.

I’ve also got an ignition key fitted because mine is the basement level bike that doesn’t normally have ‘extras’ like that fitted and I’m thinking of getting a different instrument unit which gives me temperature, rpm etc. Something like this

While you’re in the mood for messing about with bikes I’d suggest disconnecting the speedo pick from the wiring look at the wheel end and put a dab of silicon grease in there then put a couple of turns of self amalgamating tape around the connector block. Mine got damp in it and it cut the speedo & odometer functions for about 100 miles.

I’m not guaranteeing the fix will work but it’s got to be better than it was.

I would do if I knew wtf you meant !! :)

Funnily enough I did a short ride today and the speedo wasn’t working ! Doh !

Look for a small electrical connector going onto a cylindrical object that lines up with a magnet on a front disc.

Unless I'm totally misunderstanding you, I don't think it's done like that on the 701.

Without actually checking, I think the pick up is a sealed item with the cable which operates on a slotted disc on the wheel.
