Evening all,

I’ve just acquired the above bike, which is lovely, but I’d like to remove the background worry of servo failure. Can anyone recommend a specialist, easily reachable from Wiltshire, who can rid me of the servo?

Many thanks!

Indeed we can,

A chap called Gerbil007, aided by Motorworks & UKGSer

You can do it your self, its not that difficult,

Do a search for servoectomy threads, and you will find it in all its glory ..

Motorworks will sell you the brake bits you need

UKGser, will supply abuse & help in equal measure

Easy to do your self but the ABS warning light will continue to flash, you could tape over the light on the out side of the dash, I split the dash and covered the LED light with black sponge, light will still flash but you cant see it

Thanks chaps. I have done some searching but thus far not turned up anything that would give me the confidence to take this on myself. Frankly, I have pretty major doubts that I could do this myself; not everyone is mechanical minded or adequately equipped.

If your ABS is OK leave it alone, if it does fail it's only the servo part of the brakes, you still have brakes that work just not as good as with the servo, it could last for years as it is, but there again?
Just to cheer you up has the bike got a fuel strip for the petrol gauge/sender and does it have EWS ;) :D

Stroud Motorcycle Company not far from you. http://www.stroudmc.co.uk/

The residual braking if the servo fails is very bad as in almost non existent. JJH

I have an '05 and tbh, I wouldn't worry about it until you need to. There will have been, and are, many thousands of servo'd bikes that run around quite merrily just working.

I do agree that the brakes without servo working are dire and you would be calling the breakdown truck rather than riding it any distance. Deal with it if it happens

For anyone not convinced as to just how bad 'residual braking' is, try finding an empty stretch of road....wind the bike up to a good old speed.....hit the kill switch.....then haul the 'brakes' on. Like it? Reckon you'd be happy with it 2-up, full luggage, downhill perhaps, heading to that junction where a red light is waiting.....?

I tried it when I first got my RT, 'kin 'ell, not one of BMW's finer moments, to put it mildly. If you've enough time and space to react should it fail, it wouldn't necessarily lead to death and destruction, but without a healthy safety margin.....:nenau

I'd thought about getting mine removed when I first got it, but then found out that it had had the unit replaced under the BMW Insured Warranty (£1300 ish) 2 years prior to my ownership, so reckoned it had a bit of life left in it. I did speak to Steve at Rainbow Workshop about getting the fluid changed to keep everything healthy - he advised against it, saying to leave it alone if it was working OK as flushing the system might just dislodge debris that could lead to a failure. The fluid in the reservoirs is crystal clear, so I'm leaving it well alone.

I'm with you on this Pete.
It happened to me while I was hustling along some cliff roads when mine failed. The fact that I survived is neither here nor there. The truth is, I almost didn't. Off came the Servo brakes and the braking felt SO much better.

Collected my de-servoed RT from Bath Road Motorcycles this morning. Brakes feel absolutely superb and no worries of plowing into the back of a lorry with a failure now. Loving this bike!
