18k service on my XR is now being undertaken by Vines Guildford.

Do you think the near £800 service is genuinely worth the expense?

While I do not begrudge BMW for making a living and I trust the expertise that I am paying for, is this £800 ‘ish’ justifiable?? It will cost even more if the valves need adjustment.

I love the bike and can’t justify the depreciation on a new model.I just think the service cost is a wee bit steep, but I would like to hear other opinions.

:thumby:

wow - thats a big service! - valve clearance check? - do all the S1000 models need this at 18,000?

thats a big chunk of money

I don’t think all the services I had from 0- 30 k miles cost that much on my last GS, maybe it includes tyres an Mot and some farkles

I recall from when I owned an XR that the fork oil is also scheduled to be changed at 18k miles.

I do all my own servicing but if I didn't would take it to an independent rather than pay £800+ for a service

If it’s out of warranty, which I suspect it is, then go to an independent. :thumb

I often wonder if valve clearances are ever checked on any bike at these big services.
Have you seen the price of a Ducati desmo service on for example a Mutistrada. My mate who until recently had a 1200 was quoted over a grand. A third friend who races and thrashes a Ducati in club races told him that he has never had to alter the valve clearances on his race bike.

...well unfortunately it is with them now and as it is probably going to be a keeper or possibly sell. So at least it will have a full BMWSH for the new owner.

A local to me chap had his done for £500 at the 18k schedule by an independent and he had some issues afterwards.

Unless I can find a highly recommended bloke from within this parish I suppose BMW will continue to benefit.

Cracking bike though. Highly recommended.

Full dealer history means nothing nowadays to potential buyers. Starship Enterprise mileage does though.

Sorry Cabby. I beg to differ. If I was spending a lump of money I want a bike that has had specialist technicians working on it. Far to many Cowboys masquerading.

A high milage bike that has been properly looked after is a far better buy than a low milage bike that has been hidden away or worse still has not had the attention necessary to keep it running safely and efficiently.

No point owning a bike if your not riding it and putting milage on, unless of course you like static works of art, everyone to the there own of course.

BMW Service Inclusive at £1349 for 5 years and 30k miles seems quite good value?

defo wouldn't be paying for a service. Have you had a breakdown on whats included at that price ? thought 24k was the big one with Valves etc

If you placed an advert selling two bikes same age, one with 50k full history and one with 10k no history I bet the one with 10k would sell a lot quicker.

I would beg to differ on that that as well, there are far too many cowboys masquerading as main dealers!!! and at cowboy prices, just because its a small one man band does not make it cowboy.
Plenty of main dealer technicians who do nothing but replace large components, try and get them to "fix" something and they are lost, try getting your bevel box rebuilt at a main dealers, all they want to do is replace with a new one
Not fix a broken one!!!

Nice one Sherlock.........not much going to go wrong on a 10k example.

Not everyone can afford brand new bikes, so some look for the depreciation to hit and then take advantage of well kept, FDSH examples.

With fully synthetic oils and technology, most bikes are just bing run in at 20 x 30k..... I don’t know of many riders that live on the Rev limiter and there are plenty of bikes out there with 100k plus on them.

AGREE with this, but I doubt many one man bands have the plug in technology..
