Now residing in rural ireland I can’t get access to some sites like BBC iPlayer etc.
The answer apparently is to setup a VPN but there seems to be a plethora of providers out there.
Can someone recommend one based on reliability, cheapness and ease of use for an old fart like me please?

I use Surf Shark, very reasonably priced and seems to do the job ok. Like you say there´s loads out there, I just googled the top ten and went for price and security features.

Have used ExpressVPN for years now, always been good with excellent support if required. Its not free though

NordVPN is the one I use and recommend.

They have a great reputation and are always offering good deals. You can a good deal signing up for 3 years and covers you for multiple devices.

Went with express vpn in the finish, apparently their support is very good which will be important for someone as challenged as me.

Thanks all for the info :aidan

I've had to use support a couple of times, when upgrades messed up, support was top notch

NordVPN had a major data breach not long ago, so better make sure it hasn't affected you.

Data breach was in 2017 and it appears that no personal data was compromised.

You need to do a bit more research as it was 2018 it happened but they didn't disclose it until months later, and it's still hitting the tech headlines almost 2 years later: https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/whats-the-truth-about-the-nordvpn-breach-heres-what-we-now-know

Have you been getting more Russian spam than usual since then I wonder? ;)

No spam here but then you wouldn’t really just use one line of defense would you. Could have been a hack by a competitor but who knows. Most vulnerabilities and hacks go unreported anyway unless the hacker chooses to go public.

Express VPN is my prefered

I have used Express VPN for years and the support is excellent but it comes at a price. I would recommend Nord VPN if you are on a budget.
Be warned that BBC iPlayer is checking for VPN users and are blocking them. At least here for me in Spain that is what happened. Check it out first with somebody who already has a VPN subscription

My experience using a VPN, ExpressVPN in my case is that BBC IPlayer looks for a UK address as a log in. Dunno if this is related to tv licences or what. In any event it means you can’t use IPlayer without some degree of dodgy stuff. I just haven’t bothered.

I'm located in Colombia and I'm using PrivateVPN (Swedish company) for BBC Iplayer and Channel4. It usually works OK and at $44 for 24 months sub was a steal.

Avoid the guesses and 'I've used ##### and never had a problem / what's to hide? / its only for BBC iplayer / other shite!!!!!

This is an excellent resource and well researched: https://thatoneprivacysite.net/#detailed-vpn-comparison

Yes, NordVPN scores quite high, yes they got porked, they do appear to have learnt some lessons.

I never got the VPN to work, so bought a new upgraded router. That worked for 7 months then the router failed. Got a refund from Currys and had to plug my existing sky router back in and hey presto...all my channels are suddenly working again. Go figure, so not using a vpn at all and all tickety boo
