I completed my first DIY oil and filter service on the 899 at the weekend, and it all seemed to go as planned. As the bike is now worth so little (£3500 trade due to mileage) I intend to do a little more myself rather than rely on the dealership (will let them do the valve check though).
One thing I didn't have the ability to do is reset the service indicator, so using this excellent thread http://jpdiag.xooit.eu/t4699-MelcoDiag.htm I have download the software (MelcoDiag) and buy the two cables needed and connect to the bike. One final step was to request a licence key once connected to the bike which I have done tonight, so that should land in my inbox shortly. It all seemed to connect perfectly and read the vin number and some other stuff so that seems to have worked.
This means I can view fault codes, reset service indicators or alternatively potentially turn my bike into an expensive paperweight as there have been a few instances of people getting the wrong cable which has apparently fried the ECU. I checked this before connecting by checking continuity as in the OBD2 port to bike 4 ports connector and all seemed well. (A good chance to see if I remembered how to use a multimeter)
To add a complication I'm a Mac user, but the software (MelcoDiag) is only on windows. By running a virtual windows desktop via software (Parallels) it worked fine, much to my surprise. In short, I love the bike forums for the information available, and youtube (for the instructional oil change video's).
Purchases for getting the ability to reset the service indicator and much more such as view and reset fault codes are; MelcoDiag download - free, Parallels virtual machine £80 and two cables totalling about £35.
A minor sense of success that hasn't cost me much at all.
