We've got a log cabin in the north of Finland, a village called Akaslompolo which is best known for cross country skiing (about 350km of prepared tracks in the forests and hills around it). It also has a very good downhill area along with husky trips, snow mobiles to rent, northern lights if you pay attention - and a great pub. It's popular for mountain biking, walking and fishing in the Arctic summer.

The cabin sleeps 6, with 2 twin rooms and 2 further beds on the mezzanine; wood burning stove, sauna, ski prep room, cross country tracks 200m away (as is the ski bus) and the village is 10 minutes walk.
We let it out in winter and summer, currently there are a few winter weeks still empty. Price starts at about €1000 per week.

In summer it's cheaper and you have the advantage of 24 hour daylight.
Akaslompolo is not too difficult to get to, there are quite a few options. Any questions about the cabin, area or travel etc just ask.

Looks lovely Al, what’s the area like for riding in the summer months ?

Looks great - I should have known you'd have a log cabin somewhere!

The cabin is in Akaslompolo so you can get there by going up through Sweden or Norway and turning right. The run up from Helsinki has a lot of straight roads through forest so quick and easy but better if you go around the lakes to the east and then the hills in the north, some nice Arctic scenery and roads.

In the summer it is around €650 a week. Life there doesn't have to be crazy cost with a really well stocked supermarket. A pint in the pub is about €5.50 which isn't bad for Finland but tins out the shop are more like our prices. If you want spirits you take with you!

I have a friend who bought an old sunday school and chapel by a large lake up that way some years ago.

His plans were the similar, live in one and rent the other.

he said it was amazing to sit on the frozen lake in the early hours of the morning in sub zero temps and watch the Aurora borealis

Nice one :) :thumb

It can be stunning in winter. Northern lights appear quite often but they come and go so if you're sitting watching tv you'll never know. If you're in the pub and a spectacular display appears, someone usually gives a shout.

The cross country tracks have wee cabins by them with wood supplies, just go in and help yourself to a warmth, handy as it can get rather chilly in mid winter

What’s the area like for trail riding in the summer?

Lots of MTB tracks including some big downhill runs at the ski area, a few things on YouTube. Not sure about dirt bikes, gravel tracks around in plenty but I've never checked them out

Amazing. Would like to have a look at this, we usually visit Scandinavia most winters
