Hi All
Mate bought a Xsr900 a few months back whilst he took his test
Went to start it today and it won’t turn over
Battery is ok and put a new battery on in case but when he presses button to turn it over there is just a click finder seat
I’m no expert on these matters but sounds like a relay fault or somat
A few week back it turned over slow but fired up so he bought a cheapo trickle charger, could this have done some damage

You don't mention the bikes age, mileage or service history, nor the make/supplier of the battery charger, so the info base is somewhat scant.

Get a meter on the battery terminals & see what voltage readings the bike shows when you press the starter button. Is the voltage drop significant?

After seeing what is going on at the battery, I would check out all the neg/earth leads & security of the positive leads from battery to solenoid & from there to the starter motor.

Was the new battery charged by you or your mate after purchase or just put straight on the bike ?

The click sounds like the starter relay closing, but the battery doesn’t have enough power to turn the starter motor. This could be a duff battery or a high resistance in the starter motor circuit, most likely a poor earth. As already said, check all connections by unfastening, cleaning and re-fastening.
