Had me old r850 on charge and just been out to start her. Tries to turn over and then I get a machine gun rat a tat sound. Am I right in thinking its a starter motor problem.

So long as that battery is a known good un.
Easiest way is try jump start from a non running car battery.
If you do this don’t be fooled by a good reading, i.e. 12v or more, it’s how it reads under load that will tell you all you need to know.

She be a runner. Appears my old optimate might be the problem. Used a good battery and charged original
With another charger. Swopped back and original is ok.
