I'm umm-ing and aah-ing about a trip to Fermanagh in late March and might have a day or two to spare. I've never been to Armagh and know little about the area. Is it worth a visit?

Motorcycling, picturesque scenery and history.

You'll get all of that. Especially ecclesiastical history in Armagh itself. As to "bandit country", there may well be specialist tours available as there are in Belfast and Derry. If you are interested in such things though, I'd recommend a visit to Derry instead. The museum in the Bogside organises escorted walks and there's a permanent exhibition on the Troubles. Don't worry about being a Brit or ex forces. I made a point of asking when I was there. The chap I spoke to (brother shot dead on Bloody Sunday) replied saying ... "Unless they told us, how would we know? And if they did tell us, they'd still be welcome. We had a group of UDA lads last month and if they can walk through those doors ... ". There's also the city walls, the Guild Hall and a new development on the other side of the river where they are going to build a naval museum, I think.

Edit - just realised this is in the Irish section. I'm sure one of the Irish lads will be along with proper info soon!

Slieve Gullion Forest Is good for a picturesque run.

Navan Fort just outside Armagh was interesting. As was the contrast between the opulent RC cathedral and the more spartan CofI one.

But it was in the late 80s when I visited so I imagine it has changed since then. No troops on the street for a start

I live in South Armagh and it is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. There are many ancient burial sites within five minutes of my front door.

I don't know about specialist, but I'm a local here and am happy to give you some GPS routes to help you explore the area. And if you are here over a weekend I'd be very happy to show you around if I'm about.

It is indeed. As is the Flagstaff and Black Mountain. Crossmaglen is worth a visit too and lunch in the Square Hotel is very good.
Have pick nicked in the Cross Square a few times. Nice area good biking toads right through to Monaghan and beyond. Took a few friends down to Slieve Gullion and round South Armagh to Virginia and on to Carlow last year, great run.

Thank you all for your help, it certainly seems there is plenty to do and see.
Aiden, thank you for your kind offer, if I do head over I'll drop you a message nearer the time.

Thanks again to everyone for your input. :thumb2

Couldn’t have done any better. An excellent bit of info.

I wouldn't mind some GPS routes. Armagh and Fermanagh I haven't explored as much as rest of Ulster and down west coast of . Meet up in future if the tour comes off. Though I've grown up with and out of GS"ss lol

Every year, on European heritage weekend, I try to get round as many places as possible.
If you get a guided tour, the CofI is the better one to visit, and just outside it, the chained Library is also worth a visit.
Living reasonably nearby to Armagh, I can only agree with another post, Visit "Stroke City" Museum, Take a guided tour of the walls and visit the Guildhall.

Hi Timaloy, when you are in Fermanagh you could do worse than have a go on one or both of the routes here https://offthebeatentracknw.com/ , if you can download them from the website. If you can't, Alan Parkinson in Moto Tempo in Lisnaskea might have some paper maps, plus he knows some good routes himself.

As a result of being educated by an extremely cute lass from the county town I associate Armagh with the 1889 train crash

Well it looks like this may be back on, in September. As before I'm looking at a day's ride to/from Stranraer, probably staying overnight in Larne after/before each crossing. I'l like a full day around Enniskillen, probably 2 nights there before heading to Armagh for 3 nights (maybe the other way round as this might give us a full weekend in Co. Armagh).
If we based ourselves in Crossmaglen would we be able to fill 3 days riding based there, without crossing into The Free State?
