Rear Shovel - does it actually do anything?

I must be blind as I cannot see them

You must be, just had a look and simple to find, maybe you are looking for a bike specific one, look at the GS stuff on any of the sites, they are designed to fit a standard numberplate so if not specifically sold for your bike i'm sure you could manage to drill a couple of holes to suit. You are looking for a rear spray deflector.

Crossed wire me thinks.
I looking for for a blanking plate to cover the 3 screws holes once removed the shovel...

Just do what I did and get some black screws for about 50p, and touch in the bits that BMW didn’t paint. Fuck spending £20 on a blanking plate, or whatever they cost.

Agree with you Nutty. I have some Matt black enamel which I think will be a good match.
Ordered a Chinese RIP off mudguard that covers the back wheel.

Currently in Alicante for a cheeky week with the wife, weather averaging 20c with lots of sun. Bikes everywhere, have seen about 10 ktm790. Cant wait for the weather to improve in the UK

Taken mine off as it looks ugly and a have a hugger fitted.

One of the most effective ways of preventing that is fitting one of these behind your number plate. It also keeps your pillion's back nice and clean.

You're right. On my 1150 it worked quite well considering what it is. But without that shovel, it's your last 'barrier'... to the dreaded mess!

Sorted then. :thumb

I’m flying home tonight. Been used to average temps of 28 here, so it may feel a bit chilly in the UK!

First thing i remove from a GS is the rear guard thing - three M6 SS Allan Key Mushroom bolts in the threaded holes and pop the guard on the self till i sell - wherupon i refit it!!

AFAIK its German (?) law that the rear wheel is not allowed to be the last part of the vehicle, or summit like that. I remember when the 1150 GS adventure came out they didnt have them, only the standard GS.
Always removed mine. Never bothered covering the fitment holes with anything.

I have one for sale if interested £12.00 posted

My interest was in fitting a shovel to an 1200R. Anyway, the collected wisdom (?) seems to say it does nothing apart from satisfy TuV Stasi regarding how much rear wheel you can show. I shall turn to an empty screenwash bottle and experiment with sticking sections cut from that to the bike. :hippy

It helps riders behind you , off the gravel gets thrown back , on it stops it from hitting the bike behind.

As the title says, does the lower rear shovel mudguard attached to the bevel box actually make any difference to the amount of shit getting splased around the back of the bike? I know I could take it off my bike and go for a ride, but if it does work, I don't want the bike to get any more filthy than usual. :D

I'm wondering about bunging one on my new-to-me 1200R to see if it helps reduce the rivers of shite it gets covered in at the back end. :nenau

When I had GS LCs I took them off
