So, with the ethanol content rising from 5 to 10 percent in volume next year.
Will our humble and still not yet obsolete motorcycles be useable without cause to engine problems?

I well remember the change to unleaded fuel and the problem with airhead exhaust valves.

I’m pretty sure you could run an 1150 on chip fat without ant issue :D
 
I recently ran my 1150GS on supermarket E10 95RON in France. It did not like it. Pas du tout!
Resorted to 98RON after that. Still E10 but much smoother running.
Which suggests the issue is the lower RON but then at home it usually gets E5 95RON and is quite happy.
But what about the seals and internal fuel pipes. ( Replacement of fuel pipes probably overdue.)
 
Get one of these Ethanol removal kit... works great http://www.ethanil.co.uk/ add an octane booster if needed. You mix water with petrol, the water absorbs the ethanol and sinks to bottom of the container, you drain it out and pure petrol remains.
mine was about £74.95 for the delux kit a few years ago. worth every penny.
 
Us folks in the US have had 10% ethanol for a long time. Can't say I ever noticed the difference on my 1150GS or on any of my other MC's or cars (using 85 octane). Mileage may drop a bit but that's it. There are however folks that claim that engines will crater, fuel lines will dissolve, tires will blow up, steering will be seriously compromised, mileage will drop by half and that it is a serious conspiracy to ...... (fill in the blanks to suit your worst fears).

I watch those YouTube videos on what ethanol does to fuel systems over time especially when an engine is not used much and shudder. Fingers crossed we still get to make the choice here.

My 2000 R1150GS has only had E10. The big differences I experienced when the changeover from straight gasoline to E10 happened were noticeable (I would guess 5-10%) reductions in power and fuel economy. I believe the ethanol also shortens the life of the plastic and rubber fuel system components it contacts.

Best thing is for engines that may be left standing for long periods of time, you could use a stabliser for Ethanol, or better yet as little 'E' as possible so certainly the Super Unleaded fuels.

Looking at the video, and I was surprised to see that 'petrol' goes stale, and really doesn't like burning. Must be a lose of the most volatile components, leaving the heavier 'oils'.

Who knows, I might have to ride more :)

I know advice has always been to brim off the tank before storing to stop that 'air gap corrosion', now that seems to be choose a good fuel to leave in the tank.

Yes I know with a newer engine, stop over analysing and just ride. :D:moped:
