Considering replacing the water pump shaft on my X Challenge (coming up to 30k miles) as a precautionary measure before a long trip.

My research indicates that there there is more than one part number. Is there a particular one to go for, for example a later one that is less prone to wear?

Cheers,

Ian.

Assuming its the same as the GS...... Pretty sure its just an updated part from 2000/2001 onwards. The best advice I was given (from a chap at Motorworks) was to make sure to get the seals on the correct sides, square and spaced correctly to the shaft, use Molycote 111 and the correct coolant.

Mines not leaked since, fingers crossed.

Just had a look on Motorworks and you’re correct, there’s a different part no for the later X Country and G650GS - https://www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Shop/Parts.php?T=4&NU=15&M=75&Ct=FA

I’m pretty sure nothing got changed but I would just buy the one listed for your bike along with a gasket. If it’s not leaking I’d be half tempted to just take the pump kit as spares. They’re not hard to change.

There’s a chap on ADVrider making harder shafts as that’s the part that wears and causes the leaks - https://advrider.com/f/threads/the-650-dakar-thread.441434/page-1669#post-39190670

Still got my Dakar. It doesn’t come out too often but is still a great all round bike to ride :thumb2
