STOLEN GSA1250 PUTNEY HL19 CFP

It occurs to me that one can buy ballistic ppe trousers for use with chainsaws that instantly jam the chain with fibres: I wonder if something similar could be designed to snag or break a grinder disk?

If the shits have a grinder with them I wonder how long it would take to cut through the legs of the stand?

Hopefully their batteries would flatten before they get through. The T-Max 530 has an electronically controlled centre stand lock which I think is a fantastic idea.

Possibly a coating of soft metal of some sort or nylon plastic tube might clog up the grindstone and render it ineffective.

Real sorry to hear about the bike getting pinched!

Looks like the same crew that tried to take mine (GSA1200LC not a fancy 1250 sadly) from Wimbledon about 6 months ago.

At that time, they did the same trick (recorded on video for me by a Pizza delivery guy). They hacked off the rear chain and the disc lock using an angle grinder and then dropped it on its side to break the steering lock. They had just started wheeling it away when an undercover police car came at them!

The police station is literally 150 yards from the bike bay and a local guy had seen them at it and legged it to tell the Police. As the 'would be thieves' dropped my bike and fled, they headed down a one way street. The police followed and were about to 'take them out' (their words not mine) when another car came legally up the street blocking their path and the Police had to make a call to protect the public and let them go.

Damage to the bike (and thus my wallet as too little for insurance to put my premium up) was:
- Needed a new pannier rack as lock had been looped through there to keep it off the ground and they cut through he rack to get to the lock.
- Needed a new disc as they had partially cut the disc when hacking off the disc lock
- New padlock for rear chain (this time went seriously beefed up option with very little shackle on show)
- New disclock (went for the ABUS 8008 with alarm)

My bike had alarm and tracker.....ironically the police said it would of been better for them to of taken it then could of been tracked to their compound......I didn't agree with this sentiment, as was juts happy to have it back.

This is all on top of 12 months previous my last GSA was stolen outside Bank Paribas in Marylebone in broad daylight in front of hundreds of people in the street. it was never to be seen again.

So sorry for everyone who's metal gets pinched, stay safe everyone.

These Litelock belts are meant to be very good ... "too light and not expensive enough to protect a GS" I hear you say ... may be harder to get through than a bog standard lock .... take a look.

I was thinking about this -

If there was a way to disable the clutch system so that unless the bike was unlocked the clutch would not operate

You could then leave the bike in gear. and then turn the igniton off - when the alarm armed, the clutch becomes disabled

ever tried pushing a GS to bump start it :eek

The feckers wouldnt be able to ped push it easlily then lol

It is possible to cycle through all the gears with the engine off and with out using the clutch by simply rocking the back wheel and operating the gear lever so your cunning plan wouldn’t work.

I may well be jumping the gun, but now China is almost back on it's feet after the Covid 19 crisis maybe Ali express could soon provide a much needed replacement seat, with a concealed high speed revolving brass cactus (coated with fresh Coronavirus of course) powered from the battery, with a gas strut to give deep insertion properties as anti theft protection against the thieving scrotes. You could even operate it remotely by an App on your phone and leave bait bikes in known theft hotspots. It would certainly go down well with the London based BMW GS /GSA community, and drive down insurance premiums in no time once 'the word went round the hood'. Just a thought !

Sad to hear these are still going on. I lost and recovered my 16 GSA TB in May 17 from Fulham in similar circumstances, two thugs on scooter, caught on camera etc. They got intercepted by undercover police and in their effort to leg it, they dropped the bike on a nearly new parked Audi R8, damaging both substantially. Total insurance claim was a mid 5 digit number (could have bought a couple of new gsa s fully specced) rendering any further capability of a GSA ownership, impossible.
I really wish my bike was gone and unrecovered actually, as it would have been cheaper to lose it completely, plus all the faff and effort to claim and fix everything in order move on was not worth it.

Anyway, silver lining as long as you live in Putney, get an RT or an older bike. The former are unloved by the thugs, the latter are not commercial enough.

I settled with the insurance company yesterday on a total loss bases and to be honest they have been very good the secret was sending them like pictures of my GSA from the BMW site so they agreed with my valuation plus I got an extra £300 for my top box.
I am 6 ft 5in with a slightly nagging hip so riding an RT is not possible so I am looking for an GSA1150 so I can get the seat he height I need.
I don’t live in Putney I live in Redhill and commute to Putney. My search for a bike has now started which is not easy in our current situation but my days of owning a nice new GSA isn’t going to happen again.
It’s time for bike manufacturers to step up and give us the security that cars now have. When I was young my Cortina key opened all my mates Cortinas and Escorts plus started most of the engine’s....but cars now need keys to be any good to the thieves

Out of interest and as a 'victim' what measures of security do you think bike manufacturers should fit to their bikes as standard ?

All new BMW's coming fitted with a tracker as standard is a great asset but what else would you like to see ?

Me ? I'd like to see them fit a locking centre stand :thumb

Cars aren’t that super secure. Look at the high end stuff like Range Rover etc that are stolen from driveways by boosting the signals from inside the house.

Yes you can put a load of security on the bikes but at best it makes them nick the next in line. Great for you, shit for the owner of the other bike. A bike still ends up being nicked.

The problem is enforcement. As long as these scroats can come along in broad daylight in a busy public space with whatever tools they need it won’t matter what you do. They just bring another tool to defeat the new thing you have done.

Why cant we/they have an electronic "handbrake" that works on both wheels. We have hill hold so it should not be beyond the engineers to install some solenoid operated device that physically locks the wheels of the bike solid when it is parked. It would then stop the wheel away thieves, or at least make it harder for them to do.

OK lifting it into a van it won't do much good but trying to lug a GSA for example with both wheels locked into a van would be challenge.

I would also suggest an app that allows the owner to lock the wheels on command... Front wheel first dead.... that might sort a few of them out.... might not do the bike much good but surely it must be possible. (and possibly very satisfying for the owner)

Oh fuck me NO ! The poor little dahlings might get hurt when they go over the handlebars and land on their heads. The PC brigade would never allow that. Me ? Id favour a six inch spike that comes up through the seat when they are on the bike. That would discourage the bastards !!

I think an airbag squib built into the seat - and a ride connected app

if the bike is stolen, a quick phone call to the bike - and thief mode activated ;)

Like the idea but with my luck I’d end up triggering the spike. A method not preferable to sorting the farmer’s.
