The ‘79 California Rebuild Thread

Let’s hope so ...

Bonus points for me, it’s arriving today not tomorrow.

Lovely.

I was thinking along the same lines last night.

Do I vapour blast all the alloy, or leave as is?

The engine and gearbox need to have all seals renewed as they’ve been standing for years,so it’s all coming apart anyway. It does look a bit shonky.

What do you think?

I reckon you could get that motor and casings looking really nice without resorting to vapour-blasting. Might require some elbow grease mind...! This is an 'after' of my R100 motor, I don't have a 'before' unfortunately, but it was proper minging :p

Petrol, kerosene, washing powder and elbow grease can do a pretty good job on engine cases. They don't come up like new as blasting does, but that might be seen as an advantage.

A hot jet wash works well too, and no errant blast particles to worry about :)

It depends what you want,

If it’s a mint restoration, then vapour blast it, if it’s a good running classic that you want to use then lightly clean it up.

Thanks gents.

The engine and gearbox have been standing for years, so they all have to come apart anyway. Mikeyboy, who I trust to do this properly, can sort them out for a reasonable rate, so I think decision made.

Getting it to look like new, or better than new, is one thing, keeping it that way, especially if you use it, is another thing altogether.

I always rebuild mine to be easy to clean and as corrosion proof as possible but I yet to find a way to preventing alloy cases acting like a magnet to dirt and corrosion.

Good point, Chas.

The mission is to get it looking as good as it reasonably can, and everything working as it was designed to, or better.

And then ride it and allow the patina to develop naturally from there, while keeping it in the ideal mechanical state.

I’m not a very enthusiastic motorcycle cleaner I must admit.

So it begins. I’ll be up for air on Monday.

Nothing a bit of cyanoacrylate won’t cure.

Thanks Mikeyboy. I got some useful reading with the bike:

Thanks for the link to the bolt supplier as well, that’ll come in handy.

The aim is to get gearbox and engine dismantled over the weekend and the casings delivered up to you sometime next week.

Carbs are fine, don’t need doing. I’ve got some soda blasting kit coming and will try that on the manifolds.
