I have an old Lenovo Thinkpad running Windows XP.
I would like to free up some hard drive, 40GB, space on it.
All photos, music files unused programs removed but the C drive is still full.
What is still clogging the hard drive & how do I remove it ?

This will be a travelling laptop for web browsing only, I prefer the full size keyboard to a tablet.
Will use Opera or something as the browser.

visit this site and download space sniffer

http://www.uderzo.it/main_products/space_sniffer/

you'll be amazed at what crap you've downloaded over the years and stashed away ;)

start with the biggest block and go from there

word of caution though.

if its programs using up space and yo no longer want it, use it's or windows uninstall option.

otherwise you get left with loads of shite everywhere

Space Sniffer does n't download from the link.

it does you need to go to the download hub fosslink

and on the next screen, look for the line of text that says

Download - spacesniffer windows portable, it gives a link to the zip file

I use CCleaner regularly. I find it essential for cleaning out browser cache and old log files. You'll need to config some options to get max cleaning.
Also
- have a look for old restore points data that can be deleted
- look through your list of installed programs; bound to be some you no longer need. When uninstalled check all the files have actually been deleted.

No more questions thanks, deleted all the files I wanted & now have 75% HD space.
It's recycled this old laptop.

I haven't used Windows for a donkey's age, but IIRC deleting files merely puts them in the bin where they take up the same amount of space as before. Empty the Trash or Bin or whatever it's called and your disk space will be restored.

I recommend WinDirStat, a great free app out there. it lists all the files and folders within a window and display the size for each. So you can see at the first glance what kind of files eating up the disk most. And delete them as needed
