So while were in CoronaVirus lock down, I spotted a For Sale thread from 'longjohn' and decided to buy another set of wheels for my Africa Twin DCT

He was selling the RallyRaid Tubeless Wheelset (19" Front and 17" Rear).

In theory this gives me a wider range of road-bias tubeless tyres to choose from, and better handling.

As I can now easily split the wheelsets over from Off-Road (Tubed Tyres) to On-Road (Tubeless Tyres)

Wheels should be here later this week, so will be interesting to see how I get on with them. :thumb2

Apparently, according to RallyRaid website, these wheelsets come with modified ABS Rings and a new rear Sprocket which is one tooth smaller (40T) to allow for reduced wheel diameter size.

So in theory, according to RallyRaid it should all work correctly.

However, doing some reading earlier this morning, it appears the DCT shifting patterns may be altered (or cause a problem)

https://www.africatwinforum.com/threads/19-inch-front-wheel.19490/

So not sure now if it'll work now without further modifications?

Anyone else got any relevant info on this?

Doesn't the AT have a 21" front wheel and an 18" rear? RR do AT wheels but in 21/18. The 19/17 will (I guess) be CB500X wheels.

Just sayin...

Correct.

The standard AT wheel size is 21" front and 18" rear.

However, for purely road use, RallyRaid offer two Africa Twin wheelsets which are tubeless tyre specific.

Option 1) 21" front and 18" rear.... but 21" front is still a very odd tyre size for tubeless wheelsets..... and not so good for on-road handling. This option is ideal for off-roading but with a need for tubeless tyre convenience.

Option 2) 19" front and 17" rear.... as this gives a much better on-road bias for tyres and handling.

RallyRaid provide both options.... and on their website they say works for Manual and DCT bikes.

I've got them on my ATAS DCT and they have been fine. The different sprocket and ABS ring meant that gearing and traction control activation was as normal, so no issues there.

Ordered a new set of brake disc bolts yesterday (front and rear)..... so just waiting for them to turn up.... scheduled for Monday.

Then I'll get the brake discs swapped over from my other gold wheels and get these RallyRaid ones set up with the discs, ABS Reluctor Rings and new sprocket.

Got hold of a spare Sprocket Carrier, so will set that one up with the 41 tooth jobbie, so it's an easy swap over.

So now should have a complete setup to simply swap over once either a road trip, or Winter arrives.

Very interested to see how it changes the bike.

Well today I got around to fitting these 'new-to-me' Rally Raid Tubeless wheelset. Really nice :thumb2

Makes the bike lower, more 'racy' looking.

I set up the chain slack, with the bike on it's side stand, and the markers never went into the red (makes me wonder if others were setting chain slack on the centre stand).

Anyways they look great, really nice.

Very aggressive looking bike in black, the RR wheel set makesit look like a supermoto on steroids.

P

I don't understand Honda, a 19" front alloy wheel, and a 17" rear to match. A few more ponies and they'd have a real winner on their hands.

I must confess I don't get it. I thought this was your 'ride 60 miles to the good off road bits, ride 'em, ride home' bike ? Haven't you got a GSA for what this bike is now set up for ?

It is... but COVID-19 lockdown as fooked all my off-road training and riding plans for this year.

I bought these Rally Raid wheelset with nearly new tyres for a great price, with the idea I can use them through Winter Salt as my Africa Twin is wrecked anyways, it's the perfect Winter bike, as well as off-road.

During Summer I'm out all the time on my BMW R1200GS Adventure which is brilliant, I've done nearly 1000 miles on it in 3 weeks. Leaving the Africa Twin for off-road and nasty Winter stuff.

The only reason I'm out on the Africa Twin tomorrow is to try out these new wheels, and I miss riding it.

So many choices, whats not to like?? :D
