What do you use to clean your boots?

Not sure if normal polish is ok as it may damage the goretex?

One or more of the following as they are the same stuff made in the same factory apparently:
Meindl Sport Wax
Green Ledergris
Grangers wax
These treat and help proof the leather. They tend to work by sitting on or near the surface of the leather though.

Plus any regular boot or shoe polish like Kiwi, cherry blossom etc for a bit of a shine. Light coating and a good buff off.

Mink oil is good too if you can get it but does soften leather as does Red Ledergris. Or any old dubbin will do too.

In my experience none of it has ever made any difference to the performance of Goretex, sympatex or any other tex on motorbike boots, walking boots or any other footwear.

Leather Care and Conditioner

I use Lexol Leather Conditioner on all my bike kit. It's an American brand and is extremely popular with equestrian aficionados!
It doesn't contain any colour pigment and unlike "dubbin" it doesn't leave a greasy residue once it's absorbed.

Lexol also manufacture a leather "cleaner" however I've not actually ever needed to use it.

Moreover, to retain colour I also use Nikwax black leather waterproof solution.

All my work and bike boots get cleaned under a tap with a scrubbing brush and then treated with Scarpa leather cream. I took a picture :aidan how sad is that. I've used it for years.

Ive just purchased a boot cleaning kit from Alt- berg

leder-gris & leder gloss

Going to alternate between the two

thank god it wasn't amber-gris, or that could have been expensive lol

Not sure, boot cleaning is the wifes job I will ask her whats best, I am sure that will go down fine

I melt about 1/3 black polish into 2/3 nikwax. Seems to work well.

Applied warm it sinks in very well.

I use Daytona’s generic leather polish. Not cheap but a little bit goes a long way. I put it on, leave it to soak in overnight and polish it off the next day. I also apply it to my leather gloves *, just using any residue from the ‘on brush’ I use to apply the polish to my boots. I then polish them up with the ‘off brush’. I clean the boots at the end of each full day of use. It only takes a couple of minutes. My boots and gloves have been well used and used well, lasting for years.

If I happen to see that someone has a discount on the Daytona leather polish, I’ll sometimes just buy a couple of tubes.

* If anyone ever finds that, over winter, their summer leather gloves have hardened a bit. A quick go with a little Neutragena hand cream will sort them out.

In both of the above, the important word is ‘little’. You do not need to slather it on.

Just bog standard polish here. But ...... I'm always keeping on top of them, they come up like new very quickly and once you're on top of them, they only need 2 minutes each time.

I have some work court shoes that I properly bulled about twenty years ago. The polish on the shoe is so smooth and thick, that you just wipe them over with a duster - looks like patent leather .... :thumb2

Always use Kiwi boot polish and a pair of ex MoD brushes my father bought me when I left home in 1963 to join the police cadets :thumb

Brushes still going strong to this day and showing no signs of wear!

I clean mine with a damp micro-fibre cloth first, then I use Daytona’s OEM cleaner & waterproofing products or on my Alt-bergs their Leder- Gris which came with the boots.

You cannot beat good quality shoe brushes, I am using my father’s, a couple of which were his father’s.

Snap i've got a pair of them:rob

It is a mistake to slap dubbin over gore-tex boots. The reason for gore-tex is to provide a waterproof and breathable 'skin'. A slather of dubbin prevents the gore-tex from breathing. If a boot is properly made with gore-tex it should be waterproof. All you need to do is keep the leather in good nick, and boot polish or any of the proprietary gore-tex boot cleaners will do that without ruining the performance of the gore-tex.

I am afraid you are wrong. Gortex is the material liner on the inside of the boot, as with a Gortex liner in a jacket. Whatever you put on the outside will not affect the Gortex. However, the Gortex on the inside of a boot will have a finite life and once reached will then be ineffective.

Same here, after your recommendation. :thumb

As said, a little goes a long way. A bit like me. :D :beerjug:

Not much point having the moisture from you foot pass through a goretex membrane only to find it can’t get out through the pores in the leather!

I haven't used dubbin for at least 40 years when the wisdom was that it rots cotton stitching in the boot. Nikwax replaced it for me but nowadays I stick to Leder Gris or the Daytona stuff from a tube which smells like honey.
