Ireland - The Wild Atlantic Way

... time to get the diary out and start booking some leave. :beerjug:

Without wishing to piss on your parade Rusty I'd advise a bit of caution. Our government's 'roadmap for easing lockdown' has the following dates :

July 20th :
Hotels, hostels, caravan parks, and holiday parks for social and tourist activities can open, initially on a limited occupancy basis (or number of people per square metre), and then increasing over time. Social distancing measures are to be followed.

Hotel bars remain closed.

August 10th :
Pubs, nightclubs and casinos can re-open, where social distancing and strict cleaning can be complied with.

There's no date yet for opening our borders, ports & airports :(

What's your opinion on the controls that will / are in place if someone came from Scotland on the ferry to Belfast, and then headed south? Assuming that the devolved governments allow ferries to go between Scotland and NI.

At the moment John the Ireland - Scotland ferries are freight only unless you can prove that you are on an essential journey.

I'd say (hope) that tourism on both sides will get going at about the same time which will help make things easier.

Thanks. I think that the situation between the devolved parts of the UK vs Westminster and NI vs Eire on timescales will mean they have to be broadly in step. Thouhg there might be subtle differences eg schools going back.

All this talk of the WAW, I had to put a few miles on the bike. This is the Cork and Kerry section of the Wild Atlantic Way, I just returned today:okay

Mods hoping this link is ok? If not apologies and please delete

Thanks for that, Anthony. For someone like me, who's knowledge of Ireland does not extend much beyond the city of Dublin (great place that it is) it's nice to see what there is to see, if you get my drift. Your self deprecating commentary was just right, too.

I was chatting with my friend yesterday evening, about our upcoming 28 nights away in France, riding around to celebrate his retirement. Hopefully we will do something similar again next year and a lap of Ireland is on the cards. The plan would be to start in Belfast and ride anti-clockwise, around to Dublin but not to rush round, taking some time to move horizontally as it were inland in some places to see the sites, rather than stay with the sea on our right. That's the idea anyway. It's a bit ridiculous that I have seen more of Sweden than I have of Ireland and (until last year) Scotland, not least as they are both in a sense at least, 'connected' to England. It's a wrong, God willing, I intend to correct. Creating this thread gave me the kick up the pants I needed to get on and see Ireland, the additional posts from bods that followed told me that I have definitely been missing something.

PS Great colours in the pictures and video..... where was all the rain? :aidan

I’ve no doubt the rain will come soon:blast:blast:blast

Also I’ve a little bit of knowledge :rob bit more than happy to help and share so if people are traveling over and want some advice drop me a pm!

Ride safe

Maybe my last trip west this year, another few days with dry weather.

Connemara in Galway south to Doonbeg in Clare, couldn’t get a campsite on the second night so a bit of wild camping was had. Temps dropped down to 7 degrees and winter gloves had to be worn! Hard to believe it peaked at 18 degrees.

The Burren was a fantastic view and a place I’ve let myself down by not touring in detail before, defo will change that !

Ive dropped a video in the vlog section if anyone is interested, covers a July trip on the northern end of the WAW, Belfast to Antrim and anti clockwise to Sligo. The campsite on night 2 was spectacular, ill be back there again, Strandhill. Ride safe!

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but please correct me or move it if I'm wrong.

Perfect biking road off the WAW/ Co. Clare

Follow the R352 to Tuamgraney through to Scarrif, up the hill and take the R461 to Feakle (keeping right), Caher and going left to Killenana to the very end.
At the T junction onto the R458 turn left for 100 mts approx, then turn Left again onto the R462 towards Tulla.
Through Tulla and back onto the R352.....loop complete.

Back on the R352 turning left(East) heads you for Killaloe and the start of a lovely circumnavigation of Lough Derg.
Turning right (West) brings you to Ennis and on back to rejoin the WAW.

The above is a super biking road with more twisties than you will ever need. Do it on a fine clear day and the views are just magic. Time wise allow about 90 min including a short stop in Peppers pub in Feakle or continue to a cuppa in Tulla before heading off. The above route can be done either way but West to East makes more sense if coming off the WAW.

To lengthen the route if travelling W to E, upon entering Scarriff head for Mountshannon on the R352 continuing through Whitegate all the way to Portumna. Harbour is a nice rest up area with toilets etc..
Through town and over the bridge to the N65 for a few KMs turning right onto the R493 to Terryglass, Coolbaun, Puckane turning right for Dromineer harbour on the R495 (another nice stop off) then back on the R495 towards Nenagh heading towards Portroe on the R494 continuing with the lake on your right to Ballina/Killaloe (worth another stop off).
Over the bridge following the R463 around the lake all the way back to Tuamgraney and Scarriff.... another loop complete.... well done, a nice afternoons riding.

I wish I would visit these wonderful places on my bike, but I doubt that I can get there through this COVID-19. The limitations are great. I suppose, we will be pushed to stay at home and not go anywhere for much time. Pity, as for me.

This too shall pass, eventually ;)

We are currently restricted to 5km from home except for essential travel (work, shopping, pharmacy) so we can't do the WAW either
But what most of us are longing for is a couple of weeks in France on our bikes...

If you want more information on where to go & what to see then put up a question either in this section or the Ireland regional section, there's lots of us over here and someone will be glad to help out

See you next year :aidan

Lucky fecker.

As a forward, I don't begrudge you your trip...........but it doesn't make sense that we can only travel 5kms from our homes and yet tourists can wander all over the country.
Can someone help me understand please?!?!
