I have just taken my rear Wilbur's shock out to send away for a refurb on the lower mount. When I was changing my gearbox and final drive oil a couple of weeks ago I noticed free play when trying. To lift the final drive back on to the driveshaft.
Once it was back in and bolted I checked it out.
I could feel about 3mm of play at the lower bearing. Which gave probably nearer 10 at the end of the final drive.
Once the shock was out I could tell how worn it was and the O-ring on the shaft side was split and hanging out a little. This I guess then allowed it to dry out and let road grit get in to aid the wearing out.
I know it doesn't move very much and there's no easy way to lubricate it in position without unbolting it at the bottom and maybe pulling an O-ring out to re-grease.
Just posting as heads up for anyone else who has a Wilbur's fitted to keep an eye on theirs.
Anyway it's off to revs racing for a service and a new bush to be fitted.
Having it re-sprung whilst there as well as it's always been a little firm at the rear without any luggage on. :thumb2

Well, revs dismantled the bottom bush. It was so worn that it had started to wear the bottom casting of the shock.
That's being replaced as well as the service and new bearing. Guy at revs says it's worth spraying the bottom bearing with wd40 to lube it now and then.
I had been doing this anyway and it still wore out. I have a feeling it may have been bad for a while though never picked up at MOT time.
At least they can replace the lower casting.
Anyway this is just a heads up for anyone else with a wilbers fitted . Keep an eye on it.

Thanks for taking the time to post....checked mine and no play but onLy got 15k on them.

My rear Ohlins similar but a spherical bearing and I think its an Ohlins special size bearing bought used so i do not know the history but it looked real fresh when I fitted it doubt its done 25K with me should be better my opinion.

Got it back from revs yesterday. Lower casting replaced with new bearing part and a full service. Just got to find out why the bike won't start now. Nice weather for riding my TL's though.

All models after 2013 comes with the spherical bearings.
Ohlins genuine part can be expensive.
But there are brands like SKF that makes v quality replacement and only cost half of the price.
I personally think SKF looks better then OHLINS. If I find it in somewhere Ill post the picture of it.

To prevent the damage they need to be maintained regularly not like a good old rubber bush.
But you get low friction with spherical bearings!!!

Both of the ohlins dampers on my TLS's have the spherical bearings. They have been on the bikes for years and never been a problem.
A clean and re-grease now and then seems to suffice.

It was a tad worn out. Ready to go back on the bike now.
