It’s stopping the gearbox oil entering the shaft bore.
If the gearbox built up pressure the oil could in theory lift the seal lip,.
With the correct orientation it would increase the pressure on the seal lip

I have been thinking Mikey and I now a a replacement seal for the output but should the clutch rod seal also be inverted with the flat face on the inside. Also you talked about a buildup of pressure in the gearbox ,but is that not what the breather is for. Also the three other seals are in the conventional way so is it something to to do with rotary shafts. Sorry to sound pedantic, but I was just thinking. As ever I really value you thoughts. Cheers
 
Of course the breather is there,
But take a close look at the clutch pushrod seal,with a view to its purpose.

The theory behind the output seal hmmm ,who knows
I guess the swing arm is not vented so the box output seal is oriented to prevent any ingress into the box from the swing arm

That’s not the case though is it,
With conventional thinking,the correct way to fit the gearbox output shaft seal is the wrong way round .
Although the seal on a para airhead is different,it fitted in the normal manner
Hope this makes sense
 
Yesterday I thought I would fit the clutch, just to make some progress as I was waiting for some new oil seals. When I removed the old clutch I paint marked all the parts to replace as was,, but I fitted a new friction plate. Friction plate was centred with my home made tool and all the parts torque down to spec. Special grease added with a tooth brush to the spines. Progress !!!!

A few more bits done this af6

I managed another couple of hours on the bike today and started by replacing the gearbox output seal which I inadvertently put in upside down. Used the BMW club extractor again ( getting good value out of this tool) and removed nut and output spider. Cleaned the tapers with switch cleaner and tapped home a new seal . Surprisingly the incorrectly fitted seal came out undamaged using my slide hammer and a flat hook . I did not reinstall this seal. Reassemble the flange and tighten up as much as I could with a 1 meter scaffolding pole on my 450mm breaking bar. I have never tighten anything that tight before- phew!!!7

Under the starter cover

There was a bit of oil about in the starter area , so I removed the starter motor and checked the brushes. Looks like the starter was replaced in 2015, great news. The crankcase breather pipe was split so new one ordered and both gaskets at the top were replaced. All of that area was degreased and cleaned and reassemble.

Fitted a new black plastic brake hose and rotated both lever sets slightly

Another couple of hours spent in the garage this afternoon and tried to sort out a few things. The neutral switch and oil pressure switch wire was very crusty and brittle so I replaced it before the gearbox goes back.

New fuel lines

I then realized that I need to replace the fuel lines at this time or I would have to take some bits off later. There was a combination of clear and rubber on the old setup and they we very brittle. I removed all the bits of pipe after a struggle and then cut and replaced all the new stuff. Had to use some fairy liquid to help them slide over, also a heat gun helped.
I also slide on shrink tube to finish the ends. The quick release/ filters were also included

Lastly the gear lever was degreased , cleaned and sanded. The lever was primed, painted with 3 coats of black and one of lacquer. The heat gun was instrumental in speeding up the drying.

Byron, you can borrow my torque wrench for that gearbox nut if you like? It's man enough (sometimes I'm not!)

Thanks for the offer Tim but I returned the special factory tool the the BMW Club this morning , so cannot hold it or I would have jumped at your offer

why the quick release fuel connectors on a bike with petcocks? those plastic ones are a failure just waiting to happen, and as far as i can see, unneccessary!
