1981 G/S makeover.

Another update...

So the barrels and heads are fitted. The only snag was one bad screw for the valve adjuster. Also the rocker post bolts were all wrong; just normal bolts, not the stepped ones. Decided to bite the bullet and torque the head down anyway as the sealer would have gone off if I’d waited.
The last of the clutch parts are due tomorrow so that’s the next job.

More progress

The clutch is fitted, not a big job, so decided to fit the silencer. The Zircotec is a near perfect match to the original paint finish, well pleased with it.
The job stopped on the heads yesterday due to a stripped tapped adjuster screw. I was transferring the existing screws from the old rockers to the new ones and it stripped. So I couldn’t set the valves, fit the rocker covers, or the exhaust, bugger.
This highlights the frustration of a rebuild. You are continually starting a job and can’t finish it for whatever reason.

Progress

Had a full day at it today, and made some progress. Collected the gearbox from Mikeyboy on Thursday so started with that this morning. I remembered to fit the neutral wires and the clutch rod prior to fitting it. I did have to push the swinging arm back to get it in, then refit and re centre it.
The rubber boot requires some patience, but it eventually went on and I got the bands in the correct places.
After that it was plain sailing, valves set, carbs on etc.
The job is stopped again waiting for parts, the rubber boot for the clutch, felt washers springs bla bla. I have given up on counting the cost, that’s not what it was about. Just wanted a little project, yeh right.

Another good tip of a great job being done is the absence of dirty fingerprints on the mug.
Top Notch Job Colin :thumby::bow:D

Standard (ahem!) centre stand Colin? Or with additions?

The extensions at 90deg and on either foot? I assume for stability but I've not seen them before. :nenau:

Mine is a standard 81 G/S with the side peg? only on the near side.

My 81 has both sides.

Need to sort mine out though as it rests at the wrong angle :blast

Looking back, I bought one from Motobins in about 2004 to replace the original rusty and bent one.

What an oddness.

I have been looking at getting a ST Stand as a replacement for mine and it has both :nenau

Yes same here my 83 also has the same feet.

Hi Martin, I took your advice and a ST stand is on its way.

Looking at the pictures in the red bike thread, the only bike with one sided lug is the low miles (6k from new) bike.

Gerry, my bike is still running the standard centre stand, I do have an ST stand but it’s not fitted yet.

I purchased it after reading a review by another chap on Adv Rider. The ST stand apparently makes it a easier to pull onto the centre stand. I cannot vouch if it works yet as I have not fitted my ST stand yet.

Ok Martin,

The one I ordered should arrive this week and will report back on how it fits or not.
