Heading North again...

hat road up and down to Applecross must be the worst road in Scotland yet droves of bikers go up and down it regularly.

You need to remember that you and I can do it on a day run from home....others may not be so fortunate, and that day may be the highlight of their trip. I personally think, as do you I guess, that Applecross is a victim of its own success, but we are the lucky ones! Personally, I think its best visited in February when there's no other fucker there, take the car and stay at the Applecross Inn!

After leaving Skye we followed the A87 headed towards Fort William. We dodged the rain clouds , well, most of them and as everything on Skye seemed closed on a Sunday morning we were soon looking for a coffee stop and came across this place called The Cluanie Inn. The coffee was hot and the surroundings were comfortable and dry so we took a few minutes for a leg stretch and hot coffee...

I spent many a happy hogmanay at Cluanie. We had become friends with the then managers, Danny and Elma, and stayed every year. The bar shut at !0pm and after that it was friends and family, mostly with a carry-out or a bottle in their pocket for the next few days! Happy days! I've stalked deer in every corrie you can see from the car park!

A fair point, well made.

I'm heading that way over the couple of days and may take a mate up that way as he's not done it but it will be weather permitting and just to the top and back, couldn't bear going over the top, down and around.

The A87 has the fastest bends I've ever ridden anywhere, only bends I've ever seen 120 on the clock on the Queens Highway, not sure I'd have the bottle to ride that fast nowadays but what a stretch of road.

True, I rode to Ullapool on Friday had an ice cream and rode home, 172 mile round trip.

Not finished the RR yet, more to come and some of the best pics of the trip. Will get round to finishing it later today..

Right, apologies for the delay, time to get this RR wrapped up...

After tipping up on hot coffee we left the Cluani Inn and aimed the bikes towards Fort William. It was a fairly uneventful ride and we stayed on the A87 and then picked up the A82. The roads were fantastic and the weather started to get better and we only stopped at Invergarry for a few photos. We knew when we were getting close to Fort William as the traffic started to build. By the time we arrived Jon had a need for a Mac Attack so we headed to McDonalds and it was here that Ty noticed a bit of an oil leak on his 1200. On investigating further it was also apparent that the centre exhaust mount had come loose so we took some time over a fillet of fish and chips to get his bike sorted then hit the road to Glen Coe and finally on to Loch Lomond...

I’ve ridden through Glen Coe 3 times now and never really seen it properly. The first time was back in 2008, again with Ty and Jon and it was sooo bloody windy we were focussed more on keeping the bikes on the road than taking in the views. Again last year I rode through it with my wife and the weather was shite, this year was even worse. Cold wet with really low cloud, couldn’t see shit. Almost like it has its own microclimate... Will have to keep going back to see it in all its proper glory... Anyway within a few miles of Glen Coe the weather returned to sunshine and after a while we found ourselves in the traffic that surrounds Loch Lomond. We had nothing booked so pulled off the road to start looking at options.. We must have called 10 campsites at least, all of whom either weren’t accepting tents or didn’t have their toilets or showers open. Jon then called a place called the West Highland Way campsite who told us in a very Etonian accent that he was very much open. We told him there was 3 of us and we were all on bikes And he responded by asking what type of bikes? “We’re all on BMW GSs” Jon advised to which he responded by saying Aah great, a few years back I rode a GS to South Africa following the route of Charlie Boorman and Ewan McGregor.... At that point I had a feeling we were in for a good night.....

This was the view as we arrived at the ‘campsite’

As we rolled up the driveway it was very clear that this was no ‘ordinary’ campsite.. The owner came out to greet us and introduced himself as Andrew, he told us he is very strict on who he allows on site and that he described the place as a ‘boutique’ hotel and campground. We were told we could pitch our tents anywhere on the front lawn, that the toilet and shower facilities were in the house and breakfast was available in the front room of the house in the morning all for the very reasonable sum of £20 per man.. Campfires are allowed but only in the woods and we were then given a bit of a guided tour. Parked outside the front door was a very nice looking Defender which Andrew made a point of telling us he uses it for his ‘expeditions’ in the winter. There were only a few others on site, a couple in a nice camper and a women in a converted van with a very nice MV Augusta in the back and one or two others camping on the front lawn....

I take it you didn’t spring £20 each for the brek? :D

It was £20 each for the nights camping which included the breakfast which was worth it just for the surroundings!!

Enjoyed that.Great pics :thumb2

Right, I know I said this last time but I’m finishing this RR tonight...

After a decent nights sleep we were all in the breakfast room around 0700 and filled ourselves up with cereal and toast. Today the plan was to head further south to Moffat so we could ride a route given to me a year ago by the guys at the Buccleuch Arms hotel. It would take in x3 reservoirs and some lovely rides...

It did t take too long to get there and after arriving in Moffat we stopped for coffee and a bap...
